Hi everyone,

I am new to road cycling. I am wanting to do some distance riding this weekend in the CT area. I am looking for a quite route without too many hills and is relatively safe. Any suggestions?

If you dont want hills, head out towards Melkbos and then cut in land a bit.

up to Constantia

on to muizenberg

on to simonstown

on to smitswinkel

on to scarbourogh

on to kommetjie

back thru fishoek back to muizenberg etc (or just turn around at any point when you tired)

main roads fine on sundays

there lots of cyclists and places to stop (take a spare tube and water)

If you are new to cycling just ease into - gradually increase distance. Long rides if not fit does damage and kills enthusiasm. Best advice to a new rider is to enjoy your rides.

Most peninsula rides are hectic traffic wise - quietest ride would be Simonstown - Smitswinkel Bay - Ocean View also easiest hill wise.

Thanks for this. I am concerned about getting a puncture (haven't learnt to change tubes yet  don't judge). I assume the earlier the better, traffic wise

Do yourself a BIG favour, and learn basic technical skills. This makes sure that WHEN the inevitable occurs, you are not stranded.

time to learn then - two tyre levers ,spare tube, pump (if you have arms like popeye) or an inflator and two bombs (you may mess it up with one )

practice at home once just to check how it all works - youll be sorry if you don't

early mornings is fine (only once its daylight)and cooler-there lots of bikes so just keep left and let the faster guys thru

take some money and a phone just in case you flake (money for coffee while you wait for the lift you phoned to come get you )

enjoy ^_^

I did a fairly flat ride not too long ago, distance wise... I road from the Southern Suburbs out to Simonstown via main road, then back from Simonstown down Main Road all the way through to Sea Point circle, then back via Main Road home...

That's a very flat ride with but can be quite gruelling if it's hot, so take water with you and cash for any coffee stops, or any other drink you prefer...

Maybe try joining the SSC(Southern Suburbs Cycling" group on Saturday and Sunday mornings, They have a "fast" group and a "slow/beginner" group.. Plenty guys who will help you out if needed, Talk you through things and make you more knowledgeable about road cycling. They leave the Shell Garage in Bergvliet about 5:30am if I am not mistaken.. Search them on Insta "ssccapetown" or on FB "southern Suburbs cycling club" for any more info required.

Search them on thehub too, I think they are listed here under that user name, If not, I am sure someone will know how to get hold of Neil, the main guy there.

Enjoy and be safe...

Wow guys! Thanks so much for all the information. I truly appreciate it. I would love to cycle with people but I don't know anyone who cycles, but I will definitely look into the group. I like the idea of newbs learning from seasoned pros (that's why I joined the forum!).
