Unless you eat badly forget about multivitamins&viralguard&immun-whatever pills unless placebo is important to you. None of these things work at all except in your mind and the components that may help in them are likely in far too small a dose. Likely these will just be peed down the toilet or poison you (yes some vitamins can poison you in high doses - food almost never does this - makes you think).

6000km / 52 = 115km/week riding

What distance do you run per week?

At 115 to 145 km riding per week you should not be getting sick.

Multivitamins are not going to sort you out - maybe you should go for a general check-up.

Agreed 6k per year is nothing, i was off the bike for more than half a year and did just over 6k. So the issue can be:

1. Too much too soon

2. Too hard too much

3. Not enough recovery.

But rather speak to s2s and get a better idea.

Doc, what's the best timing for a flu shot relative to a big event or stage race etc?

At least 2 weeks before - but not too critical really - they are not yet available this year- just check regularly with your local pharmacy nurse and do it as soon as possible - every second year - no benefit every year as they don't change all the viri every year

Hi

So strange question, the last few months of last year I had to increase my monthly mileage to reach my 6k km goal. During this time I did the cycle challenge and got sick and was off the bike for 2 weeks. Due to this, again in December I had to increase the monthly mileage to get my goal.

I decided this year that 6k km was to little and wanted to increase to 7500 km as well as start entering in running races however doing this has now resulted in me being sick again. The question I would like to ask is there a multivitamin or a change in diet that I would need to change to to help the immune system out a bit?

I currently get enough sleep with on average 7.5 hours a night and only drink water and Rooiboos tea during the day, meaning Caffeine intake is nothing #NotATrueCyclist.

I started cycling about 2 years ago, however started properly training around mid last year when i joined a local cycling group in my area.

I posted the question on this cycling group and the below list of things were raised:

  • take multivitamin on a daily basis, and\or get a monthly shot of vitamins (B12, Vitamin B injection, Berrigloben injection)
  • increase protein intake through out the day
  • rest properly especially after being sick
  • I may have increase my efforts too quickly especially with the added running
  • eat my vegetables
  • quality over quantity with regards to yearly km ridden. May need help understanding this a bit better... In other words what is the definition quality ride?
The main reason I have written this is to get everyone's thoughts on the above and for other people in a similar situation.

Thanks for the help.

You don't mention what kind of sick??

Have you still got your tonsils, where do you live (air quality)

In my thirties I was also getting sick (throat infections) on a regular basis.... had my tonsils out eventually and since then 20 years later I hardlyI hardly ever get sick.

I had a similar experience with tonsils .... A swine having them out as an adult though! Definitely worth it in the end [emoji1303]

Thank you! I send myself, my family and my staff off to get the flu shot every Year. I will change the cycle in light of this insight.

I am susceptible to bronchitis in winter. I have been thinking about getting the pneumococcal vaccine. What are your thoughts on:-

1. The merits of getting the shot, given that I do not get pneumonia;

2. Can you have both flu and pneumococcal vaccines simultaneously?

3. Do you think there is any truth in the notion that vaccines cause dementia in later life? I came across this pearl recently, though I can't remember where, which in itself, might be indicative of its underlying truth [emoji37]

Thank you, as always, for your generosity of spirit in sharing your abundant knowledge and expertise on matters not only medical. Much appreciated always!

Would there be any negative to having it every year? Our company also provides them free of charge ....

1 - probably worth a shot - unlikely to have much downside except on your wallet and a lot of potential upside.

2 - I think you can but your local pharmacy nurse will know- in any case the flu vaccine for this year is not yet available, so you might as well done other now and flu later in the year.

3 - No - can't see that being likely - we understand the basics of dementia physiological changes to the brain - my opinion is that it would take a miracle for a vaccine to create those changes to the brain - and I am not a believer in miracles. Most of the populist pseudo research done has been comprehensively debunked and it's primary author has admitted faking the data and conclusions....

The most useful habit you can have around avoiding illness is to wash your hands and face regularly during the day- 4 - 5 times, and studiously avoid touching your face and eyes with your hands - unless both are freshly washed - and you don't need to use soap to get 90% of the benefits of this process - clean water is way better than nothing.

If it's free then you might as well have it every year - but given they never change more than half of the 4 odd viruses in the vaccine and there is crossover from other immunities I don't think there is much benefit from every year - with every additional shot you get its a case of diminishing returns ito its benefit.

Very interesting topic and angles on the discussion.

I find it interesting that nobody mentions what we called LSD. Long steady distance.

As a newby I was told to do lots of milage but at a low intensity. One of the posts did mention intensity a bit. I did that and it worked for me.

Perhaps do more lower intensity km's in the beginning and progressively later add intervals.

Thanks everyone for the comments, with all the information I have decided on the below:

  • I have started take a multi-vitamin.
  • I will be increasing my rest by only doing slow rides every 2nd week with the 1st week being the faster riding weeks. Will use this to workout what works best for me.
  • I have been doing long distance rides (generally 100 km) for a year now with my cycling group. I won't do this every week, possibly 3 weeks and rest on the 4th but this I will workout and test as I go along.
  • I have also increased my food intake, which I hadn't done during the increase and with a very high metabolism and very light body fat (weight 62kg and height 1.74m) I was probably running on an empty tank a lot of the time.
  • I currently still have my tonsils so I'll speak to my GP and see what he recommends with regards to removing them or not. Will also speak to the GP about possible shots I can get.
  • I was using the air-con in the car just after rides on the way to gym (shower) and then from gym to work which is apparently not advised so will not be doing this in future as well and will let the body cool normally.

Thanks for the help
