We have not had a classic Friday in a long while - here's to tomorrow !!

.

.

BTW did you know that animal drawn vehicles have right of way in ALL instances.(by law - fact)

.

Exactly why I asked or posted that.

No one rants and raves about horses on the road or on the shoulder. I think car drivers are all to scared of the damage a horse can cause to a car.

Bicycles/cyclists are smaller and more light weight in comparison. "everyone pick on the small guy"

Most of these guys that complain  - do not follow the road rules entirely either in their vehicles.

    - They also forget that their children ride bicycles or scooters or skateboards.

It's been a long time since I saw a post on the hub or web demanding or lambasting a motorist stops when a light goes red. Or when a motorist does not stop and a pedestrian crossing. Or when a motorist speeds. Or when a motorist overtakes on a blind rise on a solid. Or when a motorist double parks (not near a bike lane). Or when a motorist parks in a disabled bay. Or on a red line.  Never mind cell phones as we do see a few posts on those and drunk driving.

I don't know about you but those things also make me angry (especially cell phones and drunk driving), you have a point that people are more biased against cyclists but that makes it even more important imo that we are seen to be law abiding.

The bigger problem imo is that there is a general disregard for rules from all road users, it seems to be ingrained in the Saffa psyche that road rules are optional.

So ... If this licensing comes into effect and I pay the said R20 odd...

What happens when I buy a E-Bike?

Do I get to ride in the middle of the road and hate on non E-Bike riders too or how does it work then?

The problem is "collective responsibility" - if we blame ALL cyclists for the actions of SOME cyclists and blame ALL motorists the actions of SOME motorists then both cycists and motorists ARE ALL arseholes.

Perhaps we should start seeing each person as an individual and asigning responsibility/blame/hate etc on that 1 human being.

All collective responsibility does is ensures everybody hates everybosy else....

This is very true, and I agree with you.

The problem is, that the further you are from the nucleus the more difficult this is.

e.g.:

Motorists see all cyclists as cyclists.

However in cycling we see MTBers and Roadies.

Within those group again there are long sock and short socks crowds.

Like during the Currie Cup, provinces hate other provinces, during Super 1422355 those provinces pull together, but when the boss play the ABs, Bulls and Awesome Stormers fans will sit side by side in harmony.

Basically, it would be a lot harder to try and get non-cycling motorists to see cyclists as individuals than it would be for cyclists to see other cyclists as individuals.

So individual accountability starts at home. Take responsibility for you OWN actions first, then the rider next to you and so forth....

We see it here on this very forum, this very thread, that we think its ok to break certain rules if it suits us.

But few of us are willing to admit to the contribution that it makes to the perception other road users have of us as a collective group.

You state it far more eloquently than I can

Look no matter how we try and paint it, lots of cyclists are not angels and behave in a way that pisses other road users off.

We must fight the battle of educating the motorists about cyclist rights, and we must also address the morons amongst us.

People don't care about your rights if you act like a lawbreaking idiot.

We can't preach rights if we piss on the laws.

I agree with you here, however we can say the same for motorists.

Motorist should 1st clean up their own act (Stop talking on cellphones, and texting etc ) before pinting fingers at cyclists.

I tink we should have a "name and shame" scetion where we report all rule breakers. Most use a dashcam or a camera on your bike. If we see a cyclist skipp a red light / stop street post it here. With Strava etc it is very easy to name them. Then also post motorist that act like idiots.

But then again, I am not sure if it will improve. I tried to report Golden Arrow on facebook for 2 years and gavwe up, as they just carry on doing the same thing at the same place.

ABOLUTELY!!

But we cannot expect them to do it FIRST. Remember they have the exact same stance of "they must clean up their act".

Its not either or, its BOTH, we need to do BOTH make changes.

Cool, lets start the corresponding threads. Maybe if you share your experiences somebody will know somebody and could call somebody to make a difference..... thats what communities do.

"Motorist who act like knobheads"

and

"Cyclists that act like knobheads"

Just something I wanna share.

Late last year my wife was driving around claremont somewhere. She mentions how these cyclist started swearing at her about a 2m gap etc. My son was in the car with her at the time. I wonder if she was alone if they would have done anything.

So I tell her its one meter, and it turns out these guys were riding 2 abreast.

So do I save everyone the trouble and post my own picture in the tread for on occasion being to lazy to stop at the Stop street cause you can clearly see a mile away there is nothing coming?

Or do we make it a mystery and see who can pin it on me at the time?

Ohhh everyone loves a mystery :)

P.S ... Name and shame leads to lawyer letters and corresponding prosecutions. Be careful with this (I know the intention is out of frustration but if you cause someone to lose his job because he skipped a stop you in for a lot of hurt)

Chicken and egg situation, the motorist that could kill you could not even me angry towards cyclists. The guys on their phone dont even see cyclists, so the cyclist action really does not matter.

Not saying do whatever you want, just put your safety first. I am not going to trust someone in a yellow dawoo behind me coming through Bantry Bay to make an informed decision while talking on phone and smoking a ciggy. The driver will see a peleton of cyclists, realise not able to pass and only do so when safe.

When cars start passing cyclists with the required 1 metre space and when safe to do so, then we will consider single file.

Don't you get it, bro? 1 cyclist = 1m gap. 2 cyclists abreast = 2m gap and so on.
