I've just got my first road bike after a few years building up to be an only just intermediate level mtb rider.

At this stage I love both - the road bike is a different experience - it's like a sports car after riding a double cab. Did 60k out to Hout Bay and back on the road bike on Friday way faster and way more fun than I ever did it on my old hardtail mtb. Then spent Saturday morning on the mtb at hoogekraal and loved every moment - except the last climb from the bottom of Patrick's Psycho Plunge.

If finances permit the answer is both. If finances don't permit the answer is both.

Also - on that point - something not right about wearing out an expensive mtb tyre on the road.

Yup, there is something special about being on a smooth stretch of blacktop, at just the right speed, in just the right gear and just tapping out a tempo that sees you eat up the miles as the almost imperceptible sound of your drive train efficiently converts the pizza you had for lunch into the wind in your hair and the grin stretched across your face.

Then you know why you need a road bike.

My current riding mates own both. They are constantly nagging me to get a road bike as well. I don't want to.

Get new friends.  You don't need this kind of negativity in you life!

More seriously, if you are going to do a lot of road rides it might be better to get that road bike.

If Road riding was not better than MTB, Peter Sagan wouldn't have switched. (cue Dale/Gen)

The MAMILs that slate road, are usually the ex golfers who can't keep up on the road.

Get a road bike, its great, different kind of riding, different kind of fun.....

With road riding you get home earlier as you can leave in the dark, ideal for doing those long rides in preparation for the big MTB races like Sani2C, Hill2Hill etc.

Also the maintenance on the road bike is a lot less, so more money to enter the MTB races.

Suppose is also depends on where you live and what you enjoy..horses for courses.. whatever you do enjoy it.. be it on the trails or on road..[emoji106]

MTB- .... More socially orientated, its easier to chat on a mtb than on road.

Nuh uh bra - way easier to chat in the bunch on the road side by side than shouting at each other while bombing it down single-track.

Either way, if it's easy to chat you need to pedal harder
