I always said I would never ride a RB.. then one came along that I just had to buy cause it was a sweet deal.. it lay gathering dust for about a year. But now.. sjoe..I use it a lot..still alternate between the 2 depending on what I want to see on a ride, what the training plan is for the day and how much mud is about.... but I have come to appreciate what the RB can offer.

You can never have enough bikes.

Well you cannot do both well with 1 bike. So N + 1 until the nagging goes away.

If your frame allows you could always fit some 29er wheels with slicks on almost any MTB. My wife currently rides a 26er MTB with 29er wheels and 28c tyres on the road.

It works but is not quite the same as RB unless you have a really crappy RB.

Anything with 2 wheels is awesome.*

If you can afford both get both.

All my gravity mates rip me off about the roadie but if I had a $ for every gravity boy I've seen doing a little sneaky road work.....

There's something very special about getting out early on a Saturday and banging out 75km before 10.

*Except a Segway. And those silly little scooters.

I was also struggling with the same predicament. I finally bit the bullet and bought a road bike. Just tired of doing road rides on a MTB. Thus my N + 1 quest starts...

RB on tar = :D

Do I now have to shave them guns?

Its also much cheaper - no forks and shocks to service. Tyres last for years as does the drive train. That feeling of speed with hardly any tyre rumble. Only thing is when time is short I always reach for my MTB rather than the road bike - its just more fun and I can stay away from the traffic...

I train on my road bike...and the odd long ride on the weekend with mates. Use my trail bike for weekends mostly. Too expensive to ride the trail bike every day so road bike is nice to have as an extra

Both, I use the road bike for training. Easier with limited time to go out the front door and ride vs driving 20 min to a trail.

MTB maintenance to expensive to ride on the road a lot. Specially those tires. Getting fit on the RB will definitely help with MTB. MTB makes you strong and RB makes you fast.

Also gear ratio on MTB doesn't work lekker on road.

Both. In fact you'll need a bike for every discipline

Seriously though, only had an MTB until recently and used to do roadies on my MTB.  Road biking is an entirely different discipline, you're missing out on a new biking experience.

Actually Patch, your roadie nature is shining through here. You also need at least 4 MTBs.

1. XC Racer

2. Enduro/All Mountain plaything

3. Jump Bike for the pump track

4. Downhill bike to test your medical insurance

Sounds like you just need a bmx for that

On a road bike it is easier to keep your momentum and speed up ,also feels better to stand and cycle than with a mtb .For every road cassette and chain replacement you will replace 4 or 5 times that many on a mtb .I think road cycling makes you fitter and mtb makes you stronger

The first time I rode Tokai after the fire. I headed in on my bike from the new parking area. Suddenly there was this strange whirring noise. Man was I worried. Was it the hubs? Cranks? BB? I stopped to check more than once. Told my buddy with some concern in my voice to hold up while I checked what was wrong. It wasn't long before he told me that the sound came from my tyre knobs on the tar. He was right. As soon as I hit the dirt the sound disappeared. That's how noob I am to road riding. Got like 5 bikes. Not one of them is a roadie. I recently found myself interested in road riding though. I might just flog one of my mtb's to get one. They are quite pretty. Plus slogging a trail bike on tar will suck it out of you.
