Cape Town Cycle Tour Road Race on MTB - tyres

I have even running slicks on mtb for the past few months while my other bikes are in storage waiting for the house to be finished. Honestly it's a pleasure on the tar and rolling resistance is miniscule compared to knobblies. I just don't understand why I did not do it sooner. Yes it does not look the part on an mtb but even with a 1x setup it is effortless. Get another set of wheels and mount slicks, swap over wheels as needed.

WOW..... Guys, this is an awesome community!!

I expected perhaps 2 or 3 replies but instead, in only a few hours, my question received 16 replies with very valuable and helpful advice.

And to top it, a few of you offered assistance and even to lend me slicks. Thanks guys.

I did not expect this. It is wonderful to join a sport and receive such a warm welcome. You may not realize it but your eager responses show that you are great ambassadors for this sport and I thank you for the camaraderie and support.

I will definitely fit slicks for the event. I feel it will help me. I am training very hard at the moment but I will still need all the help I can get and its obvious slicks will be beneficial.

You are right, a road bike would be more suitable for this event but I won't be racing, I just want to join in on the fun and experience the vibe. Who knows, perhaps next year I will do it on a road bike (or by then I may even be fit enough to 'klap' it on my knobby tyres)

Thanks to those who offered to lend me their slicks, I will be in touch. (I live in Brackenfell).

Take care guys, have fun!!!

Johan, you say that you want to "experience the vibe", let me tell you going with slicks will make you one of the "World Champs of Recreational" riders. You will be drawn into some sort of racing group and all you will  hear is "Keep your line !!! or  Are you f****cking stupid "

Ride with your knobblies, the challenge is greater and the MTB dudes/dudesses  is much more chilled.

I did plenty of Argus rides, the couple I remembered is the 3 on my MTB with knobblies and the one on a hypermarket kiddies bike. (the small tyre one) And yes, you can do a good time on a MTB, (My best was a 3h08 from the E bunch), but I know of someone who did it in 2H52 on knobblies, (he is a hubber as well)

I rode 81 km and 1650 m climbing on my 160mm bike with 2.35 enduro tyres on it last weekend. Some of the ride was off road  some not. It was very tiring. If you want to enjoy the CTCT don't use MTB tyres, fit slicks. Unless you are a masochist of course.

Maybe to try and quantify it a bit - in my experience using an mtb with knobblies on tar vs a road bike, with the same perceived effort:

Mtb knobblies 25km/h avg

Road bike 30km/h avg

Mtb slicks - probably around 27km/h i'd say.

If you are riding in a proper group the difference would be less since wind resistance, which is the predominant factor, is negated to a larger extent.

If you reckon you'll be going it solo a lot, get slicks - the knobbly sound alone makes it sound more difficult, and when you're tired the mind starts to pick up on that big time...

All of you who are promoting slicks have forgotten one thing.

The indescribable joy that goes with overtaking people on road bikes while riding a MTB with knobblies.

Would riding this be masochoistic???? or maybe just plain stoopid!
