Fleeing is becoming standard procedure among drunk and delinquent drivers

the penalty for a drunk driver causing a fatality can become a charge of pre meditated vehicular homicide.(heavy sentencing)

the penalty for fleeing the scene of an accident is a fine added onto whatever charges can be brought after the fact (if you are actually found and arrested)

its an idiot win situation unfortunately

very sad that we have lost yet another brother cyclist on the roads...

Particular reason as to why you can't?

Don't know the full story and only telling half would result in people filling in the gaps with their own thoughts and opinions.

Also rode past the scene this morning. Ironically I rode with a group this morning after Delene Boonzaaiers death 2 weeks ago because I hoped it would be safer.

Saturday morning in a group on a wide open road with a big shoulder with loads of cyclists around, surely that should be as safe as you can be on a road...

I pray the cyclist survived!

Seems confirmed on WC MTB Facebook page that one rider died. Also that people have photos of the vehicle which was chased as far as Kraaifontein before it was lost.

Nothing's going to change because there are no proper consequences. Even more, there's no attempt at prevention of drunk driving etc.

What's the answer???

A friend was killed out running by a guy hitting him on the wrong side of the road from behind. Driver first claimed he wasn't driving then tried to run away. Was prosecuted and given 7 years but appealed and it was reduced to 18 months. Some **** about the magistrate being biased against him.

How can lawyers in all their conscience (yes, I believe there is such a thing) act on behalf of such people who behave like this??

I was on my way to do some enduro training and we arrived on the scene directly after it happened. We witnessed the driver of a black city golf ride over a cyclists bike trying to flee the scene. We chased him for about 20kms all the way back to Bloekombos (we were in a bakkie towing motorcycles). We alerted the cops on the way and they met us in Kraaifontein and put out a radio alert for the vehicle (which we had photographed) and I alerted the local neighbourhood watch teams via whatsapp. Whether they have since found the car I'm not certain.

We then went back to the scene just in time to see the one ambulance leave with the badly injured rider. I was informed that the owner of the car that was involved (the black city golf we chased) was in the ambulance getting treatment... WTF. I went to chat to him and he claimed he was sleeping in the passenger seat when the accident happened (I'm sure I've heard this story before) and woke up when he heard the impact. He then got out the vehicle to see what happened and saw injured riders and went back to the car to get his medical kit (he was dressed in a local fire department shirt). He put is gloves on (he still had them on) and then the guy who was driving at the time (someone who he was giving a lift back from a party) decided to flee the scene and left with his car. The cops have the car owner and his details, they now need to find the "alleged" driver. How true his story is remains to be seen, the cyclists left on the scene did not seem convinced at all.

Condolences to the family & friends of the fallen rider. I'm really sorry we couldn't catch the bastid in that car, it's eating me up at the moment :cursing:

Heard this one before...

How is he giving someone a lift when he is sleeping in the car? Had the owner filed vehicle theft charges against the guy who left? 'Cause if he didn't, he's talking BS...

Buff, well done for taking action in a situation like this. There needs to be more citizens like you.

This is terrible news of the cyclists.

I look around me at the way people drive in general and it scares and angers me in equal measures.

A father, husband, brother and friend was murdered by a drunk driver. My heart is heavy. RIP Gregory Basson.

Hi all, myself and a few friends were out on the road at about 5:50, saw quite a few drunk drivers on the road,we even saw guys parked off on the side of the road next to Radish Restaurant drinking beers playing music loud, my question is were are the cops when you need them. It's not the 1st time I have come across this behaviour on Bottleray road. May the fellow cyclist RIP and strength goes out to his family & friends

I've had a situation like this where guys were partying two houses up from us and driving around the neighborhood - drinking inside, out of the car and everywhere else. We called the cops. They did nothing and the guys started accusing us of harassing them. In fact they let them drive off. That was the worst but not the only occasion. This may be a tangent to this thread for which I apologize but I am ANGRY. I read all the comments on other threads like the one about Andrew's death but keep myself from commenting because, you know, how does it help?

However, i now have phone numbers for SAPS people who do care and we have a neighborhood watch type group that is extremely helpful, so I will NOT stand by when I see drunk people driving or any other crazy stuff like that.

If we all try, maybe we can make a real difference. Find out who to call if there's a problem, who will take it seriously.

For the rest, I don't know but we can't give up.

To the guys who got involved, took photos and chased this idiot, well done!!!
