Eddie Stafford Posted March 9, 2017 Share back derailleur - agterste ontspoorder / rat wissellaar - so that will make a rear derailleur clutch a "agterste rat wissellaar koppelaar". I also found "terugtraprem" for back pedal / coaster brake. Looks like there is also no Dutch word for derailleur and in German a front derailleur is Umwerfer and a rear derailleur a Schaltwerke. Wonder whats the correct afrikaans term for spoke nipples?I do not agree. It merely sounds weird because we are not used to it. Use those terms for a week and before you know it it will be the norm, we are negelcting our language. Afrikaans speakers are the biggest enemy of Afrikaans. Why do we insist on using the English terms? But let us not venture into politics and language issues...lol NelAndre

I think derailleur is a French word, not sure. But we are overthinking it, remember Afrikaans is supposed to be simple and descriptive. So I would simply use voorste wisselaar and agterste wisselaar. Sekere dinge los mens eerder in engels, ek het Motordiesel vakteorie by die Tegniese Kollege gedoen, baie jare terug en ek het aangedring op 'n engelse teorie boek aangesien dinge in afrikaans net nie dieselfde klink of werk nie. So tussen ons, ek is ook 'n oud boerseun en dra na 18 jaar na boerderynogsteeds my khaki kleure en sukkel met die terme in Afrikaans.

Nettie R Posted March 14, 2017 Share . Afrikaans speakers are the biggest enemy of Afrikaans. Why do we insist on using the English terms.lBecause too often you hear: I don't speak Afrikaans'. Then I wonder how that person passed matric,( or maybe he didn't.)We tried having discussions in Afr on the hub some years ago and were lambasted by few for it. Funny enough, I find it easier to communicate in english when I use PM's/WhatsApp's/SMS's/Emails than Afr. Pefhaps because that's what I'm used too? I prefer posting in english on the hub
