The dangers of NSAID use during endurance sport are very real- especially drugs that are. More open to abuse- They impare renal artery flow as a side effect of their mechanism and you place you kidneys at risk.

Tim is also fond of quoting that voltaren is the biggest killer at comrades - and they have several studies that agree.

I think that using a cox-2 inhibitor has lower risk during excercise than a Cox 1 inhibitor- but there is little scientific reporting on this as yet.

Would it be possible to list a few of the common NSAID's available in SA, so that us non-medical types can be aware of them?

Anything is possible..... :)

The problem is where you cut off the list...

Aspirin

Voltaren

Cataflam

Neurophen

Ibuprophen

and many many others...

https://www.drugs.com/drug-class/nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-agents.html - I am sure there are more complete lists out there but should give you some clues :)

Just as a very dumb question from a guy that has no cooking clue what does what,

The whole Tramadol saga that the pro's use to kill pain?  Maybe it does something els?

Will this be a NSAID?

so how long should you wait after taking one of these before exercising?

Hard to say - depends on what you are taking and how much and what type of exercise and what intensity... there is no study I am aware of that indicates this - but I would guess 24 hours should drop the risk to a point I would not be too concerned about... but this is strictly a guess and not based on anything I have read.

Question is really what long term damage is created via repetitive use - I cannot answer that.

A quick google search shows Tramadol does the "opoid" thing.  Thus not NSAID?

Tramadol...Tramacet...Tramal... I never want that stuff near me again.

Sorry, :offtopic:

Not an nsaid but not to be used outside of proper medical care... lots of side effects that you don't want to have- especially for elderly and asthmatics

It is very strange how these drugs has an extreme effect on certain people and minimum effect on others.

I was on hospital at the start of February with a tibial plateau fracture and got prescribed Tramahexal post-op. I said okay cool, and all it did was relieve me of my pain and some nice afternoon naps. One of they guys in the ward with me told the doc he would never take it again is it makes him very confused. His previous experience on anything to so with tramadol made it sound like he took some serious drugs at a rave in cape town...

I know a few people who take Mypaid/Myprodol before rides as a preventative for headaches. To me this is a very bad idea... what should they be doing instead? Not riding due to headaches is not an option. Water intake does not seem to effect the onset or severity of the headaches, both are women between 25 and 35 of age.
