Amashova 2017

My first Amashova. Pretty much the same as Veebee, started in AL when I knew I was better suited to BL or CL.

Held on until top of Fox Hill and then dropped hard. Eventually was passed by the majority of BL and some CL. Did a solid stint alone and then with another 2 guys as we pacelined just before diving into Durban. Finished in a mixed bunch of AL,BL and CL for a 3:08. Poor time but happy with my performance considering the amount of solo riding.

Awesome race and route, will definitely be back next year.

My very first Amashova and my second road event ever and i thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Was in the KL group which started after 8am and i did it in 4:32 which i am extremely happy with as i was expecting 5+. The hills were good but the people at the back were fantastic, had some good music and were extremely encouraging. Had a good laugh here and there with the jokes from people i never met before.

The wind on the M13 was hectic and it was here that i wished i had a group to pull me but at the back we were all suffering together. The guys manning the water stops were also all very nice and encouraging  - good people.

I had a great race and will be back next year to get a sub 4.

Well I had the rear derailleur snap off twice this weekend... still trying to figure out how and why...

All was well until 35km @ camperdown... then just as I went on the power again after the turn at the police station - snap!! Broken derailleur, broken hanger and broken rear wheel...

Same happened on Saturday morning also but was only the hanger damaged but with a different chain - could not see any other issue and did a 30km test ride without issue Saturday afternoon.

Was with front of AL batch when it all went pear shaped...

The oldest road classic in SA is still the best in my opinion.

The route has a good mix of climbs, fast downhill sections and just enough flat rolling bits to get your speed up. The last few km from Hillcrest down into Durban is magic for a fat boy like me.

I see a few guys complaining about the shorter distances riders getting in their towards the end. Maybe for the elite men and racing catergories this might be an issue. A friend of mine said that a guy was actually riding towards the slower riders in order to break the tow of the guys following him. Silly.

For the rest of us, who are racing to place 421th and 647th overall, really............ The only person who will be excited is your wife. So relax and enjoy the fantastic event.

There is something about rear derailleurs and the Amashova. Mine failed me last year about an hour in. Sorry that happened. Hope it all gets sorted soon!

sorry to hear...a person passed me on Sunday without a derailleur...he didnt have the problem like you had on Sat with the chain hanging...he was flying with no slipping and I see there are a few other incidents of broken hangers on Sunday.

As i mentioned to you on Sat. i have a spare hanger for my mtb but certainly never thought to keep a spare road bike hanger....by the way my small pliers wouldnt have worked to open the link...i will have to look into another small tool to open the link for the tool bag.

this could be interesting...who is gona pay for all the damage...is it another defective shimano component...would insurance pay out? let us know what happens.

Was in second AL bunch... (first bunch broke on Fox, if I recall correctly).

Agree that at times the pace could've been quicker, but I guess I'm comparing my DL ride from last year.

Sorry about that. :whistling:  I think I was the cause of the pace going up Fox Hill.

But the bunch just didn't want to work and I probable spent 40kms on the front dragging the bunch to Durban.

This rings very true. Somehow my rear derailleurs cable got frayed last year that the little cable threads were visible, so it did not have enough tension to change higher up the cassette. Effectively road a 11-20 the last 15kms. . .  not leka

Quick in and out for registration...in the door on the left...down the stairs (follow the arrows on the floor)...collect your envelope...then upstairs to collect your goodie bag (nothing to write home about)in fact a bit disappointed it seems they decided to unload all the 2016 bike and 2017 athlete magazines...come on shova guys you can do better than that..lucky my daughter enjoys all the little bits...soaps and stuff...the mints were a big hit.

lucky for me...I had just collected our new premium club shirt so i got exited about that.

big kudos to the east cost cycling chairman and his team...they really make an effort to give back more than we put...the new shirts are a good example.

we had great comments about the goodie bag for those that put them at the top of the list of must haves at an event! all useful stuff thanks Monica and her team!

Avo, hope you had a good time.

The Amashova officials did you a disservice. It is their responsibility at registration to ensure you actually have a racing license. This domestic racing license is not to be confused with the CSA membership that I believe you are referring to.

Regardless, hope you had a wicked ride.

Cycling KZN are responsible for checking licenses at registration -  they have a spot at registration and are normally vigilant -  sorry you couldnt find a home on Sunday -  but we look froward to hosting you again next year!

I know the hanger is the weakest link...designed to break before other parts if you fall or drop the bike...i carry a spare one in my mtb took kit...but i had no idea it was a common problem on a road bike.

My fastest Shova to date.

Everything worked out well on the date - love it when a plan comes together.

Spent about 98% of the time in a bunch which makes life a lot easier and faster.

Nice goodie bag and nice to see the expo is getting bigger even if it's slowly.

Some of the roads need some attention.

If the municipalities don't fix them before next Shova then there'll be a few problems.

Absolutely love this event and it was good to be back after missing it for 2 years.

Will hopefully be back next year.

I am sure it shouldn't be and I suspect a dodgy derailleur cage or pulley was the culprit - hence the chain getting stuck on the derailleur and in turning the pedals it got broken off.

I will be hanging to a new R8000 or 9100 rear derailleur. but now need a rear wheel also... will see what happens...

just a bit sour getting PB on all sections up to the failure... sucks.

Sounds like chainsuck.  If it is the case it is the chain rings causing the problem.  Especially as it is twice in a row.
