Did the longer ride last year at Clarens and most of the climbing was in the last 1/3.

Like V12 said, start slow and take it from there.

We started fast and ended very slowly :w00t:

Hi,

What would you suggest to be a reasonable time for a newby to do a 45km with a climb of 771m?

How long is a piece of string.

There are so many factors that one needs to consider.

The question is a test case based on personal experiences...

Hi Marlene,

Just keep in mind that you will do most of that climbing ( +- 400m ) in one climb from about 15km mark to around 30km mark, so save some energy for that.

Other than that, the rest should not be that difficult.

I am planning around 2:30 - 2:45 ( hopefully saving some energy for stage 2 on Sunday )

Those Ashburton races are tough - a lot depends ... so in the book Thor's running on your time I'll say 3:31 is when you cross the line.

I am refering to the upcoming Clarens Ashburton MTB race... Which will be my very first race, preparing for my Karoo to Coast entry...

I am 38, weigh 62, been circuit training for the past 7 years. Started MTB in January 2017.
The weekend before I Did a flat 55km in 3:26... Distance was not an issue at all but the elevation is a different story.

Thank you for all the comments, definitly widened my frame of reference!
Even though its just a 45,I just want to prepare mentally as well...

Nah, don't worry, it is all fairly obvious.

(Die Muishond is the Hub's unknown maniac racer who's actual identity is still up for debate on Strava)

Interestingly Thor - on Conties green you are ahead of Die Muishond ....

Thank you for that... Will give it an easy start... Luckily for me, I'll just cheer for you on Sunday! Good luck!

With all the advise, I have a sort of a plan of action... going to try for 3hours, but will be happy with 4.25 hours...

Hi all...

Just to let you know I got the T-shirt (medal)... It was quite a tough one... Hectic elevation and quite technical down hill... But the views were spectacular!

Couldn't do it under 4 hours... But now I know where I am and where I should be... My own frame of reference to work on.

And proud to say the body feels 100% with no painkillers or muscle relaxers... More than what I can say about my broken heart...

Thanks for your support!

You can't just drop that here without explanation.... :)

Well done on finishing - all couch potatoes got beaten..... soundly.
