Recommend a wheelset or rim - on a seriously low budget

I am now 119Kg's on a Merida 96 600 and recently keep breaking spokes!

As usual I am on a really tight budget and would like some advice as to which way I should go in terms of upgrading to something that will handle my weight and stop the spokes from breaking.

Whichever route I go I would like to go for a slightly wider rim say +/- 24mm ID.

If I were to just change the rim which would be a decent reasonably priced one to go for?

If complete wheelset, which one would do the trick? Would like to stay with CL rotors to keep costs down too.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated  ;)

Jis I wish my budget had that classified as seriously low budget.

Anyways, back on topic. You could start by taking your existing wheels to a proper wheel builder and having them rebuild it, perhaps with a different (stronger) lacing pattern. Not that I think the stock wheels are overly strong to start with, but changing the spokes and lacing pattern could help.

PM David Marshall, and forget about any stock wheelsets. He will have a few options for you.

Ja, get proper spokes and get a good builder to lace your wheels.

Mavic Crossmax... when I bought them I weighed over 160... now 120 ... that being said I am also 2m tall. I have done close on 7500kms with that wheel set and never had one once of ***. They are truely bullet proof.

I was hoping to avoid this kind of response by stating on a tight budget

It might be worth stating what 'seriously low budget' is?

I do understand that low price and durability cannot be found in the same sentence so maybe best value for money considering what I am up against....without having to fork out thousands (ok, R5000 would probably be my limit but if there were a cheaper option I am all ears :whistling: )! Hence me asking for wheelset and rim only advice opinions.

Did you just buy the rims and have them rebuilt onto your current hubs? Which spokes did you use, double butted or originals? Did you go a little wider, if so how much?

I am also over 2m's so don't think I am going to loose that much weight...already lost around 5kg's since I started doing this with some enthusiasm . If I go below 100 you might not see me if I turn sideways and I may have to start dancing around in the shower to get wet...

Please keep the advice coming, especially the heavier riders  ;)

It's an annoying anwser, but you get what you pay for. Maybe save for a little while longer and buy a wheelset that will last you longer in the end.

bud they are totally stock. as they came out the box, i put on tyres and slime and off i went.

there are a few sets for sale in classifieds.  the rims have never been trued or spokes tightened since the day i got them. only replaced bearings, tyres etc.

I would get the whole wheel re spoked with proper spokes first, and see how it goes.

My BIL is built like you (110kg 2m tall). He rides hard. Never broke a spoke after re spoking.
