Wannabe Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Preparing to service the freebody of my Easton EA70 mtb wheel this weekend.The spec sheet says a Hydraulic Mineral Oil must be used to lubricate the pawls, springs and ratchets. openmind Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Ai. I have a set of 1998 Campag Chorus hubs that run like silk and freewheel like a dream. They have grease ports in the middle of the hub. Every few years or so I inject grease into the ports until the dirty grease coming out of the bearings on each side is clean. The grease goes right through the pawls and lubes them too. Mineral oil shmineral oil.
Wannabe Posted April 12, 2017 Author Posted April 12, 2017 Popped over to my LBS over lunch, they gave me a small bottle of the proper Shimano mineral oil, free of charge. To reciprocate, I bought a few other consumables.

Sometimes the hub confuses me more than helping to learn [emoji2]If ratchet and pawls are regularly serviced, then by all means use a good grease such as Motorex (http://www.motorex.com/index.cfm?oid=1147&lang=en&eintragId=126&webtoolDbTemp=eintragDetail) Poor quality grease could become gummy after time and prevent the pawls from engaging the ratchet. The return springs on the pawls are fairly delicate and the best option still remains using mineral oil and not grease.

Sometimes the hub confuses me more than helping to learn [emoji2] Did not do the complete stripdown down to the pawls, as a special tool is needed (pictured below), but I did clean and lube as much as possible, and I can feel an improvement.
