madmarc Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Wouldn't 1 to 2 W/kg variance be quite significant? correction 1 or 2 watts on average output for 20 mins not w/kg.......Eish too many easter eggs this weekend
SwissVan Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 So the consensus so far seems like it's pure body weight.Man now u stirred the hornets nest.... At first i was thinking like everyone else I.e. It's your body weight But then I remembered when I got my power tap from cycle ops, one of the set up steps is to enter each type of bike you ride and the weight of the bike..... wonder why ????
Fat Boab Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 correction 1 or 2 watts on average output for 20 mins not w/kg.......Eish too many easter eggs this weekend ....concerted work on the denominator!

SwissVan Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Your 20 minute effort is NOT your FTP. Its a measurement that can be used for training, but its NOT your FTP: "Functional Threshold Power (FTP) represents your ability to sustain the highest possible power output over 45 to 60 minutes, depending on whether you're a trained athlete or not. As a result 95% of the 20 minute average power is used to determine FTP." So by all means use it, but don't quote it as your FTP.True, and the 60 minute test is also an estimate which is supposed to be more accurate.... BUT is it? Due to the higher likelihood of people slowing down during a 60 minute test, not because they physically can't maintain but because they think they can't. That's why the serious coaches use a lactic acid analyser. FTP tests are just an estimate, albeit pretty damn accurate estimates
SwissVan Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 What does your calculator say?Quê, what calculator?
Fat Boab Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Quê, what calculator? The one that'd you use to divide your power taps values of power by W/kg value to get which value of mass it uses?
Fat Boab Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 See it has two ways of calculating power......must be that 60 vs 20 min thing.
SwissVan Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 The one that'd you use to divide your power taps values of power by W/kg value to get which value of mass it uses?It says I should get off my fat arse and loose 5 kilos
Fat Boab Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 It says I should get off my fat arse and loose 5 kilos "I'm not overweight, I'm under-height according to my body mass index....."

I would just like to understand the thinking behind this mythical FTP value, which it seems like people still cannot agree 100% on! From what I've read in formal literature (Coggan et al) is that your undisputed FTP value can be determined from a minimum of a one hour mass start race. So to those who are doing Emperor's on Sunday and are fortunate to own a PM, please share your figures on this thread. What we want is your maximum 1 hour power. On GC you can view your power graph and ask it to filter it to your maximum average over any interval (time) you wish. Below is my best 1 hour power from our club ride yesterday. You can even overlap the graphs to include elevation, speed, HR and/or cadence. So, if this maximum 1 hour average power is higher than your current FTP, then you have a new FTP!
jcza Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Emperors is not a accurate representation of FTP. Too flat and too much loafing in the bunch.

I'm ignorant, but wasn't the 'old' idea of threshold, however quantified by HR or power or volume of kotch, related to a 1 hour solo time trial?
