I thought the avatar looked familiar, but didn't think to check... Where's the facepalm emoticon when I need it..? My bad...

Avatar is new, never used it before.

Need to keep a low profile, considering I'm returning to a previous employer next month. Hopefully the alias helps me fly under the radar.

I don't know, I hardly do any MTB events.

Most of whining about number collection seems to be around road events.

Well ya, because I have my own personal SAS board for MTB events that I use every. single. time.

I also don't understand this number collection thing, it really is a pain in the arse. At least have the option of it on the day, or at various other locations in the province (like the Carnival Race had, although it was still time out of my schedule, it wasn't that far).

9% have thus far voted that they enjoy number collecting.  "Enjoy" is to "take pleasure in".

Dunno if I've overlooked or missed something but how can there be anyone anywhere on this planet who enjoys number collecting?  Each to his own.

Why do you need a race number if you are riding with a chip?

Identification. If you crash they need to access your details ASAP. You'll see on the back of the racing numbers there is space for you to fill in your details. I ALWAYS fill those in. Ain't nobody got time to look your Ractec number up while you're KO.

Please fill those in!

I always run and ride with my ICE id. I think they should make this compulsory at races.

Think it is time we do extra effort to support the "disruptors" in the industry, BoutTime events. They did the Mahala Magic last year.

Hazeldean Cowhouse Winter MTB race:

60km – 08:00, entry fee – R180
30km – 08:15, entry fee – R150
12km – 08:20, entry fee – R100
You can collect your numbers on raceday
You can enter on raceday
If I remember correctly they even Reseed you on Raceday.

Some organisers go out of their way to accomodate cyclists, these organisers should be supported!

Permanent number you renew every year with your CSA license.  Either standard printout or CSA mails you a durable number with all your emergency info on as well.  Online process to request new one should you loose yours or print on paper.  This number is your ticket into the start pen.  You enter a race.  Your start pin is given.  You pitch up with your shiny bike at the pen.  Someone checks you name on the list.  You show them your number and all are happy ever after.

Exactly.

As with most things in life, solutions are not the problem. It's the motivation to make the change is the biggest hurdle.

Add a QR/barcode somewhere and the person at the start pen scans the code, no need to check for name, a simple photo pops up and the App confirms that entry is legal.

Like Patch said, solutions are easy to come up with. It is implementation that is the issue.
