Ultegra Shifters not shifting

So today while in the reserve my rear derailleur stopped shifting past about the 3rd last gear. It will shift perfectly between 1 and 8 but not go any lower than 8. We removed the limiter screw entirely to test, still same issue.

It seems as though the shifting paddle will still click, just no action from it past that point.

Some guys suggest it could be due to dirt clog up in the shifter and some WD40 sprayed in there generally sorts it out. Before I try this, has anybody ever had a similar experience and how did you resolve it?

Thanks

A similar thing happened to me a while ago (on 105 though). Turns out the cable had frayed and got jammed in the guide in the shifter. It would also still work in the higher gears, but the derailleur couldn't pull the cable through the shifter for the low gears.

Check the frayed cable issue first then the WD40 idea. I've done the WD40 on tons of old 8/9 speed shifters and it sorts them out chop chop.

After spraying the WD40 do you need to re lube anything?

Nah. Put the little tube on the nozzle, loosen the brake cable so you can open the lever wide, open the lever wide, spray onto the moving parts, wipe off the excess. Some liquid woll leak lut over the next few days.

Something like this happened to me today...

My derailleur was stuck in its lowest gear, and the shifter would click down through all 11 gears leaving the cable itself completely slack. Needed a bit of manhandling to get the derailleur to move again, if it didn't move I was only just down the road from my house - safe. I haven't ridden my bike for over 3 weeks so it had collected all the dust from my room :P

On a more serious note, I lubed up the RD with WD40 and wiped off the excess. Going to replace and lube the shifter cable as well as a precaution.

Hi,

Just a question, Ive almost got the same problem.

It clicks on my sti lever and the cable moves but the rear deraileur wont move to the smallest sprocket at all.

Ive even undone the tension screw so there is no tension to it and it still wont shift. If i move it by hand it'll move down.

Ive Checked the limit screws and ive lubed up the moving areas.

Could it be the springs/ Alignment?

Is there too much tension in the cable?

Is there too much tension in the cable?

Thanks for the Help

Doubt it, as i've undone the tension screw so the cable is disconnected from the derailleur.

DO NOT SPRAY WD40.

You more likely have a cable fray, issue.  Or have shifted while the bike was stationary and you've spooled the cable head.  Meaning it's jamming the lead end of the cable.  I suggest you take it to a shop.  WD40 is not a lubricant, so please don't use it.

Bent hangar perhaps?

You say you adjusted the limit screw?  adjust it to just past the smallest cog

Will double check the hangar but i think ill need to take it in to check if its bent as I don't have the tools.

Dont think it is the limit screws as I can move it by hand to the smallest cog and it'll stay there.

GCN is the best, ive used those vids initially diagnose the problem, but no luck.

Thought the hub might have experience

If you have set the limit screws then there will be no need to move it by hand.... without cable tension it will default to the high limit screw

Suggest replacing the cable and setting up from scratch

Will Give it a bash and see what happens.

Dont think it is the limit screws as if i remove the H Limit screw and I disconnect it from the cable completely, It still wont move down.

Now that sounds like a bend derailleur cage
