Prescription sport eyewear

Hi Hubbers,

For a while now my wife has made use of her Adidas Evil Eye glasses. We had to get the prescription lenses cut to size and even then its not a perfect fit in the frame. Doing the baviaans this year and I would like to get her a new pair with both dark and clear lenses for night conditions. Can anyone share some good feedback from any other eye wear brands that can accommodate prescription lenses.

Regards

I have tried them all, Oakley are without a doubt the best.

They could even do my astigmatism lenses in vary focal so I can read my Garmin as well.

It took less than a week from the time I visited my optometrist until I got my glasses.

Wow, you must have a fantastic optom.

This was some while ago, but when mine were done they had to send them with my prescription to Oakley in the States, and I had a 6 week wait and an eye watering invoice to pay. But, I swear by them though they are getting a bit tatty.

Eddy, can you pm me the name of your optom, or are they all so jacked up now?

It would also be cool if i could see my garmin!

I will PM you my optometrist details but in short, she has a series of Oakley frames on display (just like all the other frames), she captured my prescription and it was sent online to somewhere in Europe (Ireland, IIRC). The lenses were couriered out and she fitted them to my chosen frame. End of story.

My optometrist had my lenses custom ground and fitted to my frames - slightly unusual script means I can't see where I am properly.... these are a precursor to having some adjustments done to my eyes... and my opthalmic surgeon is not convinced I will like the result...  and for riding a bicycle, I don't like it (having hit 2 440l bins lightly so far) , but worn permanently my brain will accommodate after a few weeks of exercise.... hopefully.... he is a cyclist too...

I love what they do for me at a distance of over 30m.... just the 30cm - 10m zone is disorienting - walking on an offroad trail is tricky....

Do you mind sharing the details of your optometrist (and roughly how much it all cost)? Also looking to get some prescription lenses for riding.  :)

I had a pair of Adidas Evil eyes. The problem I have with those inserts are that very often I would manage to look past the side or top of the insert. Then I have blurry vision.

I then moved on to a pair of oakley frames with prescription lenses in the frame. These work well, however you don get yellow tinted lenses for low light conditions.

I have since start using contact lenses. I have struggled for many years with these but since last year I am loving it. If you can use them, they are the best option, as then your choices are not too limited. Also it decreases your blind spot in terms of looking past your frame of the prescription lense.

I had a set of Oakley Holbrooks with lenses (standard) needing replacement so decided to get some prescription lenses put in (from the local optom). Tried riding with them, they're NOT riding glasses. I'm not sure if the normal lenses would do the same but I get a mirror effect from behind (glare only, not a full on mirror). so when riding in mottled light it has a bit of a strobe effect which isn't ideal.

I'm not sure if this is a function of the frame shape, lens finish (manufacturer and tint), internal lens shape, dust on lens, etc.

Contacts seem to be the way to go, Im currently going through fitting of rigid scleral lenses because the condition I have doesnt play nicely with normal lenses. It would be great to wear sunnies again and getting lenses changed seems too much of a hassle.

very interested in hearing your thoughts on the scleral lenses.

i cannot deal with contacts, so i ride with Oakley photochromic lenses.

but scleral lenses have always been tempting - expensive though...

They are very expensive, my ophthalmologist is a cyclist which helps quite a bit in understanding how they will be used.

I did a trial fitting and they are pretty comfortable compared to the other options but a huge pain to get them in. If you leak some of the fluid then you will get a bubble and need to start again so it will take a lot of practice.

I couldnt even handle soft lenses but I think these will be ok once I can get the art of getting them in mastered - and trust me it really is an art!

I find the inserts for my Evil Eyes really great, being astigmatic my prescription is slightly tricky and cannot be done in a frame with a large curve.

The RX insert in my Rudy Project also does not give any issues.

Had RX lenses in an Oakley Juliet and that was a waste of good money.

Also had a Sziols set once, until they got stolen I found them absolutely brilliant.

Yes, I have the same problem, and there are very few sports sunglasses one can use to fit a prescription lens. Inserts worked for the time I used them, but I wont go back in all honesty.

Misting up of the lenses was also another concern for me.
