I know there was a guy selling some cools pens for a rider to go to SA camps a while ago.

He obviously knew the rider personally.

But is there a fund that people can donate to, which can help these riders out?

I am sure I saw a rider that had one of those..help me get to Europe thingies going .. but for the life of me can't find it now..

I know the hockey set up a sms thing to help fund their trip to Chile..was one of those sms a number and the sms would cost you R30 or so..

I reckon many people would help out like that.

Minority sport syndrome, simply not enough $$ in the bank.

Rather spend the money on safety and development of younger talent who are not yet at national / elite level. Unfortunately elite / national and age group level athletes will need to find their own sponsors.

CSA could (perhaps they do this already) set up a person / group responsible for finding $ponsors / raising funds for the development of young talent to get them into the situation / level where they can find their own sponsors.

not even surprised. Next CSA will start charging riders to go overseas...

they probably already factored in an "administrative fee" to co-ordinate the bookings and travel arrangements.

Considering the numbers of riders entering Argus, Cape Epic ext, cycling is not a "minority sport" but commands big bucks.  So much so there are 4 big bike shops in walking distance from one another in Pretoria east.  Consider how much money is racked in on licenses and race entries, and if CSA got only 1-5% of that they would be flush.  Maybe the problem is not the funding, but rather the spending?

Funds from licenses and race entries won't be enough, never has been and never will be. All those races have their own costs which have to be covered first, so there is not much left over for sponsoring athletes.

How much do you think it costs to fund just one athlete to an event overseas?

As mentioned before by others it's not just cycling, plenty of other sports in the same boat. Are they all being mismanaged?

I have no idea of CSA financials but I do know it's bloody expensive to pay for one person to go overseas for one or two weeks just to do one event, never mind a team or larger group.

CSA needs one of those crowd funding pages...

In all seriousness, if the talent can get this set up right it could actually be a good thing.

Personally, I'd rather give my money directlky to the riders who needs it than to CSA.

For example, I give R10 to CSA, R8 probably goes under 'other' expenses, R1 to road, 50c to MTB, 25c each to track and BMX.

.

All participants in a race need at least a CSA day licence at R45 for the day. All of which should go to CSA.

For a simple race like Karoo2coast with say 4000 riders, that is R180 000.

I believe that to fund a single rider for one event (say 10 days over there) could be done at < R20 000. So there is one event which can fund 9 riders.

It costs about R40K per athlete per event (That is what it cost to go to Duathlon worlds a few years ago)  By collecting a small amount per race entry, CSA can have a funding model where the mass participants can contribute to the National representative riders at Worlds.

I suppose the real issue here is the lack of optimization of the market value of the "SA team" moniker.

Other countries (and sport unions) have money-tised the brand "team SA".  You can buy kit, supporters jerseys and sport drinks ext have been endorsed.  This is a major income stream.  However, CSA, TSA ext have not pursued this, despite the massive revenue stream it may provide.

think of it.  If you make a CSA cycling team, you would be expected to endorse say PVM or USN products, you would be provided VIttoria or GEAX tyres, Would have to ride SRAM red, and your kit would be genuine ANATOMIC, and the wannabees would have to buy genuine replica ANATOMIC kit to look like you.  Also you will be to fly MANGO to the next years SA champs, your hydration pack would be green and OSPREY.

With such a goody bag, and each of these endorsements bringing in say R3k, the Worlds would be paid for.......

Okay, here's what I'd like to see. We(Hubbers, whoevever with a passion for this) establish a fund. A fund that is independant and not connected to any governing bodies whatsoever.

If atlete x needs money to take his/her riding to the next level or needs to get to an event, he/she fills out a form and then fund x helps with the costs.

Now to put money in the fund is a little tricky I think. Not impossible, I think it's very doable. We could host cycling events/braais whatever to help raise funds. I'd be willing to help out if there were such events; and I'm sure many of you would to?

However, I think there should be some sort of way to make the riders involved in fundraising as well. Start a vegetable garden that supplies the local flea market, where the guys can plant their own vegetables and sell them-just an idea.

None of the above has been well thought out-just thinking out loud.

So instead of moaning about CSA, PPA, FSA, let's make a plan and do something about it ourselves.

I am not disagreeing, but how do you get to R40K?

A flight to Europe and back can be had for R9k. What does the rest consist of.

Oh, CSA already collect R40 per entrant per event as a day licence.

How did they previously assist the cyclist?

Serious question.

My daughter was fortunate enough to be selected ( as a first year 17 year old junior ) last year for the XCO World Champs in the Czech Republic .

Cycling SA funded the whole trip . Flights , transport , accommodation ( it wasn't great , but really also not bad ) and food was taken care of by CSA ! I was really impressed and grateful to CSA for the opportunity they gave my daughter to be able to compete at that level . The amount of experience and the life lessons she learned was something I would never have been able to give her .Knowing also that she was supervised and safe meant a lot . Also staying with Allan , James and Phillip meant that she was coached a bit about World Champs racing by guys that at least have some experience there .

This year it will be a bit more difficult though . I am not sure how CSA will organize things , but taking juniors oversees has quite a few unique problems that adults don't have . ( for example - you cannot rent a car if you are under 19 ) .

Living in the North West province we unfortunately cannot go to our clubs ( non existent ) or local or provincial government ( I don't want to get political here , but lets just say NW is not known for their financial savvy ) to try and get funding here for oversees racing .We currently have 3 juniors in our town that have real potential to compete at Worlds this year . And because sponsors don't really like to sponsor juniors ( believe me I know ) funding this year will be from Dad .

Its a pity how the system works currently , because the future of our sport is going to suffer immensely if we cannot give our juniors the opportunity to go and experience what racing at that level is like .

We all complain ( rightfully so ) that we have no one really competing at the top level since Burry , and now its gonna be even more difficult to get our juniors on the right track to be able to do so .

Not all of us buy day licenses.... some of us have the annual version....  which saves you money after the 4th day of racing...... #smarterthansome.....

Still I would be interested to see CSA's financials.... and lifestyle audits on the senior staffing....
