Maybe this is a stupid suggestion but if you don't come right with the insurance issue, wouldn't it be a better option to leave your bikes and hire/rent bikes over there?!

Like i said, might be a real dumb ass suggestion from my side.

Rental bikes start at 50 Euro a day for a decent roadie. And by the look of his itinerary he's going to be travelling around a lot.

I don't want to risk problems on this trip riding a bike thats setup even a little bit incorrectly.

No luck with Cyclesure: "Unfortunately we will not be able to assist you as our international cover only takes effect three months after the inception date of the policy."

Is it a whole new policy or did you recently add the bikes? If you chat nicely to them they may be willing to waive the waiting period.

Is it not covered under All Risks on your policy, assuming you have...

The bikes are currently insured with Outsurance under their out and about but I suspect that won't do. I am going to go through my policy tonight and contact them.

Anyone have any comments on relying on Outsurance for covering lost/broken bikes while traveling overseas?

Out and about is all risks cover, as I understand it. Hopefully that's adequate for you.

If the bikes are currently covered under Out and About, it is the same as All Risk cover, that provides cover globally and not just in SA. I doubt you should have any problems.

I went to France 2 years ago with some mates. Yes I do have them.

Tickets paid by credit card for free travel insurance, upgraded to premium insurance in case of falls for medical mainly. Cost was R600 for a month.

Bikes were insured on Home contents all risks as specified items, premium around R300 a month. Informed insurer going to France for a month, no increase in premium.

Bikes were stolen 2 weeks in. Insurance paid out for agreed value which in my case was cost when I built, not replacement after collapse of the ZAR so I lost a bit on my new build. My mates got replacement as agreed values where correct.

Travel insurance had a limit of R2,000 per item so I got R2k from them too to lessen the blow.

My advice: Specify the bikes on your householders policy at the correct value telling them you are going OS. Pay the small premium and have a worry free trip.

All road cycling. Here is a rough itinerary .. my wife is mostly handling that part and I think it has changed a bit (will update tonight):

1st June: Travel to start Bourg-d'Oisans (northern alps)

2: Faf

3: Col de la Croix de Fer

4: Alpe d'Huez

5: DBF (du vin + baguettes + fromage)

6: Galibier via col du Lautaret

7: Galibier via col du Telegraphe

8: DBF

9: Col de la Madeleine

10: Col d'izoard

11: DBF + travel tp Bedoin

12: Gorge de la Nesque

13: Mont Ventoux from Bedoin

14: Mont Ventoux from Malaucene

15: Return to Paris

.. (visit friend in London)

21: Leave Paris (fly out in the am)

Take a 28/11 cluster or compact gearing.... I have ridden a few of those climbs with a 25/11 and 53/39... can't say it was fun.... if I had had more gears I would have used them...

Yeah I tried out my 11-28 today. Usually use an 11-25 but I can't spin that for long at 9%!
