I'd be very surprised if he'd even qualify for finals.

As I said, it would be interesting to see.

Sadly while he is a pro sponsored lean racing machine it's unlikely to happen.

Personally I think he could qualify.

He has the skill and confidence, would just need time to adapt.

I recall the days when Burry (RIP) raced DH and XCO in SA as a junior and he was not the only cross country rider to do this (Yolanda Speedy being another ).

Granted those were in SA last century.....

Nino has the fitness down , has insane bike skills ...maybe not a big downhill bike but i doubt it will take him very long to get used to it.

Will he qualify for finals ? I think so

Will he challenge the top 10 ? Nope , I think he'll be somewhere in the 40's or 30's

But for now thats just A wet dream , Nino will be in xc for years to come ...

Just for reference, Sam Hill, before going across to the EWS full time (which he is now seriously close to winning) was struggling to always make top 30.  His top 20 result at Fort William this year was one of his better results in DH in a long time.

Go have a look at the names outside the top 30 from this weekend.

Why though?

This is off topic, but what makes enduro so different from DH?

Their technical skills are probably very similar if not equal, power and strength would be more or less the same as well, the only difference I can think of immediately is that the enduro okes have more endurance?

Yes you need downhill skills in enduro and the downhillers have generally done well (ie Tracy) but its not nearly as intense as the UCI WC Downhill. There is also the pedalling to the stages, so its endurance and a multi-stage game plan that is required. UCI Downhill is a very specialised sport, needing a lot of focus to the 3 mins.

Its the same really as XCO vs XCM: the athletes are at their peak when they do XCO then move on to XCM once they can cant compete, although some do both. XCO peeps play with XCM but not vice-versa,Ladies is a bit different, there is  more cross over.

My opinion of course.

Riding semi blind vs having a far greater knowledge of the track. That's Sam's strength. Being able to just wreck a trail he's seen just once or twice vs those that get an age for analysis and "the perfect" line. That's at least what I read when he moved over. He's always been excellent at those tracks which have a curve ball thrown at them or need immense skill to negotiate properly.

He's also farking fit.

Also remember his sole goal for the last DH he rode was to qualify for World Champs in Cairns.

My point is that even the guys who crush the EWS with comparably gnarly descending skills required to DH, barely feature on DH races (Martin Maes is another one), so to think Nino would make that transition successfully is speculative at best, but more likely naive.

XCO  and DH require totally different mindsets. The mind is much harder to train than the body, and might never be trained to think a certain way depending on the personality and character of the rider.

Ha ha ha...

I had the same thoughts

Must say I am happy for Silverback though, I do like the brand.

Goodness knows that the Silverback folks have been breaking themselves and certainly deserve the win as much as any other brand. That company works darn hard to provide equipment to the consumer that is at least equal to or better than their competitors and at a better price to the consumer too. Silverback is now not only the consumer champion, but now they own a UCI Podium top step too. Those ladies on their team have put on nothing but a good show since during the Cape Epic.

Great racing yesterday!

The women's was really exciting, such a mixture of talent and ages and wow Ghun Rita, what a lady!  Good to see Yo!anda finding her form as well and the Brit taking the win.

Nino, as awesome as he is, didnt quite have it his own way, another lap and it might have been a different outcome. Koolhavy ... when he is on a good day he is something else. Van still has a thing or two to learn about XCO but will be great to see him again.

You notice what bike the Brit was racing?
