Good luck. We need all the motivation we can get. The eternal key is that ones lifestyle / eating habbits have to completely and permanently change or else it all just eventually fizzles out and we slip back to the way we used to be.

To throw in the most important factor: why?

Why are you eating like a horse? It's not just learned behaviour.

Look deeply in the mirror, flush out the background and it will all make sense.

Fact is, nearly all of us have some form of eating "disorder".

You were taught to finish your plate, to be strong soos a bees.....etc etc.

All this has shaped your world and makes you deal the way you do with one of the most important factors in your life: your nutrition. Coping mechanisms. A dietician cant help with that - initially.

just my 2c (based also on personal experience)

My why is based on a variety of reasons, mostly to do with 2 operations on my arm that kept me off the bike for around 6 months, and I lost ALL (most) of my fitness, and gained a ton (or two), and then work commitments and regular business travel (I type this as I sit in Namibia) did/does not help either. All in all, a mixture of bad habits and bad scenarios all combining to make me fat and slow, with next to no endurance....aargh I hate it. My new Spaz Camber with the 2x group set also makes my quads want to pack it in and leave every time I hit a hill...Seriously, why do these new group sets make it so hard to get used to them?

Robbie sounds like you are dealing with a couple life's curve balls .....

Here's the short version on my health and cycling history :

- 80's cycled between Stellenbosch and Bellville for the school run, pocketing the train fare.  One way to get FIT as a lighty !  OK-bazaars bike and school bag on the back ... and those lovely hills between Stellenbosch and Kuilsriver ...

- 86 - got wiped out on a motorcycle and spent 3 months in hospital.  Right knee took a knock ....

- early 90's - got back into cycling and did the road-funride scene ....

- 95 our life took a turn and cycling was put on the back burner ....

- 99 diagnosed with crippling arthritis ..... painful to cycle .... so packed it all in.

In the following years my waist kept on expanding, and I found more and more excuses to not exercise .... ek HET mos n goeie verskoning.

Career path led to some high stress projects ....

- 2011 I peaked at 108kg and ended in hospital with an anxiety attack ... initially thought it was a hart attack.

Lost a bit of weight, stabilized between 102 and 104kg for a few years ....

-2016 - diagnosed with type 2 diabetes ..... THIS was the turning point.

Seriously changed our eating habits !  Got down to about 90kg.  Borrowed a bicycle to see how my knees would cope with light exercise ......

Now commute to work and back, 4,5kg one way, 2 to 3 times a week, and some short weekend trail rides.  Today was my longest distance to date : 15km

Weight stable at 85kg for the last 6 months.

This aint no "diet".  I KNOW that if I eat wrong I pick up weight, saw it twice already while on leave ....  It is a complete life style change.

My knees are coping with these short distance rides, but DO let me know when I push it a bit harder !  (will see tomorrow how it coped with todays ride - should be okay as I spinned rather than power pedal ..)

My general health is a lot better.

Even my diabetic blood tests are good.  But it is on my record now, forget about getting affordable life cover .... (gotta hang onto what I have)  Changing your life style can help to "repair/regain" your health to some extent.  Dont think for a second the insurers will give you a pass ....

Hope you manage to turn your luck around in time.

Maybe a bit much personal info for a public forum, but maybe it can help somebody to avoid the same pitfalls.

Hey Chris, thanks for sharing, as it already is going to help me. I am still in a position to not let my health/habits get away from me. I can already ride around 60-ish km if it's flat(ish), and just need to get back in the swing of it when I return to the fairest Cape. I have joined the gym, and am not sure of other than cycling/spinning, which exercise regime will be of benefit to me. I want to a) get fit, then b) get thin, then c) get strong. Your input has helped,

...... as I am going to Namibia for a business trip. Mostly this whatever I can lay my hands on will consist of Gemsbok rump, Gemsbok fillet, Gemsbok rump and fillet, some Gemsbok burgers, and possibly some Gemsbok rump just for a change again...But thereafter I promise, I will be good.....

Nothing beats that gemsbok (or springbok/kudu/eland) steak at all (ok maybe a lekker vet Kalahari skaap-rib)! The healthiest meat ever! And greens!? Well the gemsbok already did that part on my behalf. ????

I can add that I have tried the gym thing, a couple of times, over the years .....

Only time it really worked was in 2005 - I was on 6 month study leave .... Did 90 minutes in the gym each week day.

Back at work it becomes a pain - for me.

Fighting to get parking, then too many people for not enough equipment/space ....

the short commute is just the most practical option thus far.

Your story is a hectic one, you have my respect!!

Do you have RA, and if so are you on DMARDS, biologics or both?

PA (Psoriatic arthritis), same family and as nasty as RA ...

Been on biologics for the last 9 years.  Pricey, but it really provides you with a second chance at a normal life.  Well sort of .... wont ever again do the long rides .... but if I push hard those pesky primary school kids wont pass me on the home stretch of the 15km ....    :whistling:

Making the mindshift to make the best of what you "can do" is probably the biggest challenge ...

Knowing I am not in it for a stage win, means I can either ride for my own best time, or take the camera along and ENJOY the day and the scenery it offers

Best of luck with your journey ChrisF. At least you have the right attitude and dont feel sorry for yourself. Good to know there are others with simular conditions who refuse to let it cripple them. Got rupus (RA+lupus) myself.

Sure you know the stages of acceptance and all that ...

Was sorry for myself until I met an 18 year old girl.  She was a very active athlete, and got repeatedly misdiagnosed .... by the time they figured out she had PA it was too late.  By 18 she was mostly in a wheel chair and awaiting multiple joint replacements to get some sort of quality of life .....

That is when it sank in just how lucky I was that I was diagnosed early !!

we are so lucky to live in an era where these meds afford us quality of life.

Studies have shown that weightlifting (not bodybuilding) has the same effect as HIIIT workouts. So look for something similar to that.

Crossfit is arguably one of the more well known regimes but the fees are pricey.

Try to work in some form of squat/deadlift/bench workout as these are your primary movements and have the greatest effect on your caloric burn.

Just remember as ChrisF pointed out, it's not for every one. Some love the gym, some hate it.

If you're serious about losing weight you can hate every minute of your exercise as long as you focus on the end goal.

Boxing too... Also pricey too... but with the added benefit that a right cross on the bike can be the difference between winning and losing... or keeping your bike and losing it...
