No doubt there's a post on HBO right now about a crazed cyclist who scared the poor pooch half to death. And a call for ALL cycling to be banned.

The amount of times I have cycled through Hout Bay and wished there was a fly over, like the ones in town from Suikerbossie and Constania nek to the bottom of chappies... Would be amazing.

True, the smell of pussy does drive some dogs wild.....

Sharp for a Monday morning!

I got taken out by a playful Irish Wolfhound, luckily at very slow speed. Dog wasn't agressive, but I chewed the owner's ears rather badly.

Meh I dont see the problem really. Its highly unlikely the dog is going to bite you in a situation like that.

I have my dogs on a leash if there are people or other dogs around but once its all clear and its just us then they come off leash again. They also want to have some fun and enjoy the outdoors a bit.

Perhaps not, but losing control and falling can be pretty serious too. <see great dane post above>

I suspect if I posed this question on a dog site, the responses would be vitriolic in the extreme

Boerbul took me out on Marine Drive, Bluff, Durban, last year. Dog had been attacking cyclist, walkers and school-kids before. Owner warned numerous times. My Mtb sustained 25K in Damages. After I smashed into the pavement infront of the owners' house at 4 am, I made such a noise defending myself, using the bike that the owner evetually opened his front door. No help offered, just "Do ride past my house in future.." Cool. I walked 6 km home carrying the bike. Reported an accident at the Cop Shop. Got given an accident report number. Personal injuries were not serious and did not warrant medical treatment as in Hospital etc. Took the bike to 3 bike shops to get quotes for repairs. That done, I approached small claims court (free service). They give you a standard form to fill out and I delivered a this letter/form a demand for R15K to the owner, same day. Owner has 14 days to make good on this payment. In my case nothing was forthcoming. Back to Small claims with an affidavit that I did personally hand the owner a letter of demand (could have registered posted as well). I was given a court date for 16h30 the following Monday afternoon. These cases are heard at night. Owner was notified by the sheriff, I paid R250 for the Sheriff Service fee. Day of hearing owner was told to pay up within 7 working days. R15K + R250 (Sheriff cost). You are limited to R15k in small claims. You forfeit the rest. Take it or leave it. Since then the dog has not been seen. You cannot claim for medical expenses. no witnesses allowed. Just you and the other party. K%K thing to go through, but I was livid with "Don't ride past my house in Future...."

I put the blame on the owner in this situation. Both my dogs are well trained and walk off leash and listen/obey on command BUT I only take them off leash when we at designated dog parks. There are 2 that I go to in Joburg(huddle park and walkhaven) They are for dogs and dogs only, Its separate from anything else(Huddle has a mtb park but the dog section is fenced off). When walking my dogs in the suburb or any trail where I may come across anyone or anything where either me or my dogs are in a unknown situation there is no chance they coming off leash. I trust them but not that much.

A dog decided to attack me on Table Mountain about two weeks ago while on the bike I jumped off and put the bike between us. The owner just laughed and said his playing  , I should of given the dog a stone cold stunner and said I was playing.

Ah, that reminds me that there's nothing quite like a Rottie sinking its fangs into your thigh to make a seaside holiday memorable...

You shouldn't complain, poor little doggies also need to run free on designated mtb paths...and, of course, "he's never done that before".

Luckily, doctors / hospitals do charge extra on public holidays...but it's not really a problem to cough up a few thou to keep the animal lovers happy.
