Sarcasm is a great defense mechanism if you don't have any knowledge to back you up.

Human babies? Seriously, grow up.

Whilst true, sarcasm is also a good way to add humour to a situation. Particularly one where you are so deadset on being the centre of a heated argument. But hey, imma be over here just watching you and learning how to grow up.

Thanks big guy. I'm learning so much. WHY DOES NO ONE LISTEN TO ME A CALORIE IS NOT A CALORIE!

Obviously there is more to it, but I really don't feel like engaging with somebody who is clearly just being argumentative.

I only know of one definition of a calorie, it's a unit of energy. It's the energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius, if I remember correctly. I didn't know there was different calorie? Is a kilometer not always a kilometer either?

Does a vehicle require the same energy to travel one km along a road that has an incline of 20% than one that has an incline of 5%?

Ate less of what?

Only you have the answer to that!

I was a heavy bugger at one point. I bought a bicycle, cycled to work every day 19km each way and ate less of what I usually eat....portion control!

Dropped 15kg

The energy required to do something has nothing to do with a unit of measurement. That km will always be a km.

The colour of a ruler doesn't change its length.

I'm making a point about a calorie being a set unit of energy measurement. The chemical composition of a calorie doesn't change the amount of energy in a calorie.

Some are now confusing energy and work, Patch.

'cos it's a gross oversimplification. A calorie will always be a calorie. It's where those calories come from and the effect that the type of macro (carb / protein / fat) have on insulin, and even more than that, the type of carb / protein / fat and the effects that THOSE have on the body.

Certain foods may elicit a certain response, which leads to potential weight retention or some such factor which may not be explained as simply as "eat less"

the type of food matters, to some people. But overall, all it takes is a calorie deficit.

I am not just being argumentative.

If you only consume your daily calories in coke you will be lethargic and tired and your body will try and store as much fat as possible because of high insulin levels. Foods high in carbs are often calorie dense and makes it way easier to over eat.

What I meant by a calorie is not a calorie is that a calorie derived from a high source of carbohydrates taken at the wrong time will cause your body to store those calories as fat if they are not immediately consumed. Now you'd better hope your body will burn that fat again as you train. Not always the case.

We have often seen where people will lose muscle instead of fat being at a calorie deficit but not controlling their insulin levels. You can give me **** as much as you want, but this has been tested with many people from all walks of life. Simply eating less is dumb dietary advice.

When I started riding, I weighed 95, I now weigh 75.

I ate less.

It's not that simple. You're assuming there's only two metrics that you changed. I guarantee a boatload of other things changed too that all added up to what is you today.

Eating less will work in the short term. Then your body's metabolism slows down to account for the decrease in calorie intake. During this time, weight drops. When your metabolism catches up, weight decrease will slow. Ever seen "The Biggest Loser' on TV? this is what happens.

I suspect the metabolism slows to BELOW the the calorific intake, and this will cause weight increase (hey, it's gotta go somewhere). makes sense, but i don't have the science on hand.

Human babies is the obvious answer. Or as you might like to refer to it, food. You know, the stuff with a caloric value. Not cardboard. But apparently a calorie is not a calorie. So I dunno, maybe I just wished really hard to not be a chunky monkey? Worked a charm though.

Are you going full Tim Noakes on us with the baby diet-stuff???

Actually, you make a very good point... Nursing babies are fully ketogenic as mother's milk is 10-17% ketones. Not to mention all the good saturated fats. Then we shove Purity into them...

No sir! That controversy caused that poor soul enough of a headache. For legality's sake, I would like the record to show that I do not advocate eating babies.

If I only eat bread but try and eat less of it, I am not going to lose weight. Simple as that.

Cracker bread is considered by many to be a healthy food choice although it contains 77g of carbs per 100 grams. Compare that to cauliflower which contains 2g of carbs per 100g. Do you think I'd be able to eat more cauliflower bread (by wieght) at lunch instead of cracker bread?

Why do I have to control my appetite because I want to eat crap instead of eating as much as I want of the good stuff.

A calorie is not a calorie. There is so much more to it. Eating less is the crappiest dietary advice ever given. Eat less of what???

A calorie is a calorie. Why do you think long distance hikers can live on pure junk food for 6 months at a time and still lose weight? Figure out how many your body requires (macros), and consume accordingly. It's only as complicated as you want it to be, really.
