Spent the evening trawling instagram and in the end found another parent in Cape Town that has imported a Alu kiddies first pedal bike with V brakes and a low BB. Just going to find out pricing. If it ticks all the boxes then will go this route.

carbon?!

do you want this kid to be teased about his plastic bike from such a young age? I should report you to child protection immediately.

get one of these CUSTOM STEEL BIKES and he will have any chick he wants, even some he doesn't

As for the weight will make him stronger, kids have 'X' energy. It gets expended over time. By having a heavier bike he just uses more energy quicker. With the light bike he will just ride for longer.

Nah... See the reason I'd want a carbon bike for my pair of rug rats  is purely selfish as I spend most of my time carrying 2 of them than they spend riding as they decide they want to ride bikes and get about half way around the common, can't ride any more ("my legs are so broken daddy") so then want to run. I then have to carry two heavy as hell, awkward bikes plus any mermaids, soft toys, backpacks, snack packs, water bottles and tutus (which were always going to get caught in the wheels) behind them as they carry on their merry way skipping an running for another 100m before then deciding they are bored with that and want to go play on the fallen down trees in the middle of the common. At that point it's pack pony time across the common and then all the way back to the house muttering that I should have just driven the double cab up with the entire house in the back to save time, tears and secretly wishing they'd be into walking everywhere and just forget about cycling. ;)

My point was more along the lines of, for less than the cost of a Makro special I could make a bike that would fit him better and in turn happen to be lighter.

I think it's really cool.. his little balance bike-like-dads is too cute..

If not, why not. . Makes you happy building him a mini carbon all the better. . Dad and me time in the garage building up a bike.

After much reading and research, I bought my son a Frog Bike.

There is a local importer that was willing to sell to be direct as none of the LBSe in my area stocked it. Went for the 43cm (inseam measurement) or 14".  All of 2 minutes, I kid you not.  2 Minutes and he was peddling. I missed it as he saw it in the back of the car after the wife went to collect it. She took it out, he grabbed it and of he went, no trainer wheels. He is 3 1/2 and spend 1 1/2 years on a balance bike with brake.

Nice and lite aluminium (not carbon). Glad I went with the 14" as he had full confidence from day 1. Here is the range  https://www.frogbikes.com/. It even came with a road and mountain bike set of tyres.

Also, if you have more money, the gold standard in kids bikes (or so I gather from the net) is http://www.islabikes.co.uk/.

What I found to be important, Must be Light, No backpedal or coaster brake, Child specific crank and brake levers (no adult parts), No training wheels, Do not buy a size that he "needs to grow in to"

I got a 'Frog' bike off of DawieO when his daughter outgrew it. It is still too big for my boy (think it is a 20 inch) but it has an alu frame, alu wheels, Deore XT (canti) brakes, gripshift and DEore LX RD with 7 speed cassette, Shimano gripshift, flat alu bar and dinky alu cranks with singe chainring. Now I just need to get my lad to want to ride bike! Although he does like watching TdF with the old man...

PS right now he is 4 and has a 16 inch bike too - but no interest in riding it. That's OK, I only learned to ride a bike when I was 13 and got my first one.

The one from instgram is the littlebig bike from Ireland. Balance bike that turns into a pedal bike.

cool, looks like it will be ok. But not sure why you'd need balance bike capabilities since you're past that already.

In general i find something that tries to do too many things doesn't do any of them well in the end.
