Eating chains for breakfast?

On my road bike, I am told by my LBS that my chain will need changing soon, and that I cant just change the chain without changing the cassette. Is this true for every chain change?

I have been quoted 10k for both (super record) which is beyond crazy. Loyalty or no loyalty, will rather import or buy from cwc.

R10k. That is insane. You can buy a whole Potenza group for less than that.

Use a, CWC special 10 spd 299 chain. I oil with sewing oil and blood sweat and tears

How long does the sewing oil last? Does it make the drivetrain black after a few km's? Ratio of sewing oil:blood:sweat:tears?

Wow... amazing that. I made the comment, and wragties when I checked my chain this evening it was at 0.75. So, tomorrow is MTB day while I get another chain for the roadie...

Why?

Does it still work normally?

When yes, don't poke the cat

Clean, lube, ride

All thin oils will make the chain black, It's a sign that its working. Like the oil in your cars engine, If it doesn't go black its not doing its job. On my race road bike and race tandem I use silicon oil and those bikes obviously don't get used as much(only for racing, no training) so the chain needs to be cleaned after every race so when you rock up on the start line it is so shiny.

my anthem 2 x 10 speed...800 km chain (harsh conditions...lots of mud and water) has just hit 0.75...it has been replaced...cleaned and put in a packet marked A...chain B is now on the anthem...cassette and chain rings still look ok...when chain B hits 0.75 i will replace with chain C and keep rotating. (as per advise from park tool video)

merida 2 x 11 speed...not sure of the milleage as the chain was on the bike when i purchased it second hand (could be around 2000 km )...it has just 0.5...replaced it last night with chain B...will rotate as advised.

trek was a 3 x 8 speed now 2 x 8 speed...around 3000 km the last exchange...loose fit on 0.75 stripped...replaced cassette R320...crank (to a compact complete with new chain rings) R1200 and chain...at R149 for a sram PC830 chain i dont even waste time rotating...just throw them in  packet in case i am in desperate need of a chain or cassette...they still work...not slipping.

was using expensive chain lube...rock n roll 4 oz...read an article about using the oil i put in my vehicle 5W-30...best thing...a bit messy but quiet and cheap...i dont clean my chain anymore just add oil when it looks dry...now when the chain checker is loose in the 0.75...the chain goes into the packet and either gets donated or left in the packet in case the piggy box is empty.

It goes nice and black, so you know when you fully lubed.

I go for a 1:1.2:.5:.75

My guess is your shop doesn't use one of these?

Shimano's chain checker is slightly different to others - Shimano chains that show wear on other checking systems show "ok to go" on Shimano's checker.

I would also guess youve been throwing chains away long before they need to be...

I lubed my chain with some extra virgin olive oil. Will see how that goes...

I had a friend that used to boil bearing grease and soak his chain in that and then drip dry. Not sure it helped.

A friend of mine cleans his chain in 2 stroke fuel. Then leaves it to dry and the oil in the fuel has "soaked' in. Doesn't lube it afterwards.

Use an inch rule to measure your chain - more accurate and it gives you an idea of the amount wear.

I do not wash my chain too often but oil every ride or second ride.I do brush my chain with a steel brush. Have been using clean motor oil and just touch each joint with the oiler (plastic squeeze bottle) . No wet chain.

Thinking of changing to machine oil as most motor oils contain a detergent.Sewing machine oil is a light machine oil and maybe a bit too "thin".

Get good milage from my chains.

Listen to your chain - they do talk to you.

To OP you can "cross chain" in your middle ring

I am one of those who used to soak chains in a molten mixture of candle wax, beeswax, graphite powder etc.

It works a treat, but not as a lube. The primary benefit of this process is that you get your chains CLEAN. After this treatment the chain still needs a proper lube.

Still works 100%. I'm scared of messing up my cassette.

You're right. At 0.75 you should replace the chain or it will eat your cassette and those are much more expensive
