Daily update:

Karmi is stable - 21% oxygen and  19ml milk per hour.  According to the night shift she really cries when she gets hungry.  An appetite can only be a good sign!  For the first time, she is also stable during an hour or two of kangaroo care.

Fantastic news . How are Mum and Dad holding up ?

Understandably, they are tired, stressed and still grieving. They are being strong for their little girl. According to them, the support of family, friends and kind strangers helps to keep going.

I think they will get a huge emotional boost from now being able to safely hold Bunny :)

Absolutely being able to hold her will be very beneficial, the emotion that first time, well it's pretty special.

Update:

The doctor is concerned because Bunny isn't really gaining weight. She went from 1.20 to 1.24 kg in a week (40g). They cannot increase the volume of milk she is given, so a dietician will try to figure out what can safely be added to the milk to increase weight gain.

Is she being fed formula or expressed breast milk?

Hopefully she will soon be able to be fed normally.

while a 40g gain does not seem like much its still 3.3% of her bodyweight in a week - at least she is gaining and not losing weight - so it's a huge positive - as is the slight focus change of her doctor in their primary concern (I may be misreading this a bit, but sounds positive to me)

Morning all :)

Bunny is being fed expressed breast milk.  They will be trying an increase to 20ml per hour and are adding Nestlé PreNan FM85 human milk fortifier.  She is holding steady on 21% oxygen via nasal cannula    Apparently, she will be dressed in her first  onesie today - I'll post a pic later on.

Thank you to the anonymous donor who contributed over the weekend!  We now have  R12 950 to contribute towards her expenses

Update:  Huge scare again this morning!  When the nurse handed Bunny to her mom, baby's saturation and heart rate just plummeted.  She was fine again a while later.

She is still getting 20ml / hour fortified milk and oxygen via nasal cannulas.  Although risky, the unit manager has indicated that they have to start weaning Bunny off the oxygen now.  This is going to be such a stressful time for her poor parents...

These medical staff KNOW their game.  They would not attempt this if Bunny was not up to it.

YES, there may well be a few scares down the road.  But this is certainly a very positive sign.

PS - still waiting for the pic of Bunny in the onsie .... :)
