Jenny Rissveds to miss World Champs

Something similar happened with the all blacks a number of years ago. The All Blacks were sponsored by Mizuno and all players had to wear Mizuno boots whilst playing for the All Blacks. Some players had their own boot sponsors such as Jonah Lomu, Ian Jones, Jeff Wilson and a couple others. Think their personal sponsors gave them dispensation whilst playing for the All Blacks.

Yes but the All Blacks are paid a salary by their rugby union for playing for the national team.  This means that they can ask their players to wear certain items that are sponsors of the All Blacks.

In jenny's case, she does not get any money from the Swedish Cycling Federation.  Her team, Scott, are the people paying her salary as well as her own sponsors like Oakley.

or Wayde vHeerden wearing this ridiculous 361 branded suit that doesn't even come close to fitting him. That's because ASA took the money for the Olympics and that is the team kit.. Somehow he still broke the world record, I'd give him and extra 1/4 second for running in that piece of crap.

Same with Team GB/Sky ... a fact that seems to escape Bromee/SweCycling, and actually CSA/sasCOC with things like the Olympics. Making riders wear that 361 stuff.

My 2c - if the nation pays for everything then I reckon they have the right to demand the athlete use the matjons equipment. Sponsors sponsor athletes in their peraonal capacity not their national capacity.

National events only happen once or twice a year - I can't see how a reasonable sponsor wouod have a problem with that...

A slightly different way of looking at it.

You work for Coca-Cola. Pepsi decides they're going to sponsor Womens month but only if everyone in the country wears Pepsi shirts for the whole month. The ANCWL make a promise to Pepsi that it will be so. Coca-Cola have a policy that if you are seen promoting a competitor you'll be fired.

What do you do?

AFAIK it happened with the Dream team (NBA)in the Olympics in the 90's. Team USA was sponsored by Reebok. Jordan and I think some others, refused to wear a Reebok tracksuit to the medal ceremony. It became a massive incident, almost caused a DQ, but the spin doctors worked it out the night before, after phoning Phil Knight of Nike. They appeared on the podium in their team tracksuits zipped open and folded back, obscuring the Reebok logo.

Let's not lose our minds - we're talking about a few riders for a few days not a whole nation for a month. TWo products in a sea of products not two prominent rivals.

Edit: Also - sponsored riders not employees and sports bodies not political bodies....

Just trying to think of it slightly differently. I just remember having to fend for ourselves when we were competing, and having to do (and fund) everything ourselves. I would have loved it if we had full sponsorship of kit and equipment. But if you're having to fend for yourself with no support from the national body, and then get told you can't compete for your country because you have personal sponsorships (which is a huge contribution to your being as good as you are), its a bit of a kick in the teeth.

I really feel that if a national body wants to dictate what you use in a competition, then they need to contribute significantly to your actually being able to be there.

Mid 90's saw the birth of ambush / disruptive marketing.

This is not it in my opinion. Or that's what I would like to think / gather from what I've read and heard.

There are at least 2 sides to the story wrt to representing your country.

The BIG FU imo is that you have to be part of a national team to take part (at least i think its still like that)

Why cant athletes enter as individuals, as long as she meets the qualification standard?

Think of it, she can enter world cup events in her sponsors kit as an individual all year long and still be recognized as a Swedish rider, but not the world champs...

To be stubborn enough to disallow your Olympic Champion athlete to compete for your country at UCI Worldschamps because of a sponsorship tassle is seriously moronic. It is a complete failure in sportsmanship and disqualifies this person at Swedish Cycling to work in his position, period.

If I was a decision maker at POC, a brand representing the passion that keeps us attracted to this sport, I would issue a public statement in support of the Athlete rather urgent...

Just my 5c...good night...

Agreed 100% - the governing body can't have it both ways. If they don't contribute then they get zero say in what the rider uses.

Conversely - it's a bit cheeky of the rider to get all expenses paid from the governing body and still want to use their sponsor's products.

Either way - it's a shitty situation - this is something that could have been prevented by one or two meetings but egos and politics got in the way
