Any anti-fungal/anti-bacterial soap or disinfectant will get rid of the smell.  Just be aware that a lot of these could be bad for the elastic rubber parts of the strap, and break it down prematurely.

Yes  - premature elastication

What is everyone else doing with their straps??? I have had one Garmin HR Strap since 2009, only changed batteries in it.

Its got a little crusty, but no smell and keeps on going.

Wow, that strap must be taking quite some punishment. I've had mine since late 2015.

Perhaps your cleaning method is too abrasive?

i sweat like a pig and hate any funky smells, so yeah I get rough when scrubbing it.

the rubber thingy covering the electrodes usually starts falling off

What do you do to keep it clean&fresh?

Get a cheap 5l bottle of white vinegar, about R50.00

Mix 50/50 with water in a bucket

Put all your stinky outfits in to soak for 30min

Squeeze the excess out, leave the remainder in the bucket for next time.

Wash as per normal

Works way better that expensive anti smell stuff from Sportsmans warehouse

Just a bit of feedback - soaked the strap in 60/40 Dettol/water for 12 hours, came out smelling like Dettol! Then after a few more uses the Dettol smell began to fade and the original unwelcome smell is returning.

Even took Fanie's advice and 'showered' with it a few times but to little avail. Perhaps I will use another strap in the mean time.

I'm still using version 1.0 of Garmin's HR strap.

Still working like a bomb.

Have replaced the batteries a few times and I replaced the elastic once.

I'm having problems syncing my V1.0 strap with my 520, even thought the website says they are compatible?
