It WAS required for 'safety reasons'. I'm doubtful it still is.

If the bikes get any lighter the riders will for sure get blown off the road in some of those cross winds

Many bikes carry ballast to get them to the 6.8kg limit, so won't be a reliable method.

But surely there must a more reliable method than pointing an iPad at a bike.

Neodymium electromagnets? You ride up next to the peloton and all those with magnetic motors swerve violently to the left. If all the switching doesn't get the cheater beaten to with an inch if his life... Self-regulation.

Sounds like a task for the X-Men

The UCI guy will wave his iPad mcthingy at this bike and just walk on. The riders in the race will choke on its fumes and post race tell the media that they wont compete if anyone is using a motor. Its nothing but smoke and mirrors.

Indeed, but teams use standard frames and build kit, some use ballast and others (i have seen) just go with industrial weight stems/handlebars/etc to get it up to weight. Weigh each team's bikes (with and without wheels) upfront to understand what they have done to get things to 6.8kg.

I don't know what a motor+battery weighs but if a bike (without wheels which should be weighed seperately) is noticeably heavier than it should be based on build-kit/ballast, it must raise eyebrows

Thermal cameras will get you a 100% false positive on a climb because the heat from a 100 watt electric motor is < 10% of the heat from a 1600 watt human motor.

Thermal cameras have been tested, and the seat tube is generally warmer than the rest of the frame simply from being next to warm tires and warm legs.

Thermal cameras are also unsafe because you need to use them when the motor is being used -- or soon after -- so you need yet another motorbike in the peloton.

Thermal cameras are easily bypassed because you simply stop using the electric motor when said motorbike is next to you.

Really? 100% false positive - Been tested already, you're sure of that?

I also don't think riders being able to observe the testers and then switch off is a fullproof defense either! OKES are full gas and tired, might even be better to have the bikes on remote control!

I'm not saying that thermal cameras are the silver bullet, but it's definitely not a bad idea. There are a combination of ways to detect motors, and by using all of them you increase the chances of finding it.

I wonder if forcing all riders (in the grand tours) to use a power-meter rear hub and have a unit recording both hub PM and crank/pedal PM data would work. Easy to see if there are sustained periods of significant difference in rider output and power at the hub.

I'm not quite sure if this would work for the in-rim motors though.
