Also, not all cores are removable:

cheap plastic tire levers all have a groove in the non tire side... which is, funnily enough, exactly the same width as the 2 flat sides of a valve core! shock horror... (also amazing how many people don't know this...)

So if you own any tire levers, chances are you had a valve core removal tool all this time

Thanks for all the useful advice!

Spoke to my LBS for a valve core remover, said no such thing exists, won't be using them again.

Changing LBS and will take all the advice as above.

the mind boggles .... some shops ....

I have two of the plastic tools that you can have for free .... comes with the "sludge bottles".

I am a tool-junkie, so I bought a nice aluminium core removal tool - NICE   :)

1) remove rime from bike

2) remove core - SLOWLY, give it time to vent ....

3) hang the rim with the valve at the "5" or "7" position

4) add the sealant with the syringe.

5) replace valve core

6) re-inflate with your normal pump

next round I may remove the tires to clean out the tube ... dont want too much to accumulate too much gunk in the tire.

I just use little piece of old 9 speed chain. 3 links or so. The core fits between the plates of the big link. have one in my little toolkit riding around as well.

For the love of all that is good and holy, please don't use pliers on anything on your bike ever. All it'll do is multiply the bill at your LBS when (not if) you strip something and need your mechanic to rescue it.

In this case the tool is free, so it's the cheapest investment you can make.

I use one of those free core removers and this is my solution to topping up sealant. Also always put a little Vaseline/grease on the tip of the core before putting it back as mentioned by a few others.59c3d7510f2eba6b4bd3d7a8b0a04286.jpg
