Do we help?

I have always told people mountain biking is awesome and the crowd that goes with it.

After doing the K2C i noticed that this year has change much from last year. No matter where i am riding if i see a fellow mountain biker standing i will always ask if they OK or needed help.

On many incidents they need help but don't want to inconvenience to the next person.

I have given tools, tubes and just about any little help i can to help the next person complete the event or get to there destination.

I noticed that less people are doing this. Has it become something of the pass or is it more about chasing time?

It's all fun and games offering guys help and tools, but my thoughts are:

If you are stranded and your tool is not working/broken or you are out of bombs/tubes because you have used all of yours I will help gladly.

If you do not have your own tools or bombs or tubes- you can think about packing them next time on your walk back to the car.

We dropped more bombs than North Korea on Saturday at the Dr Evil Classic, the first mixed team caught us and without blinking an eye gave us a bag of bombs. I think people are still awesome.

Swings and round abouts, 2 years ago at the Argus on the second lap I cut a little deal with my bike shop and got 6/7 bombs and tubes at a lekker cheap price. We then hammered around the second lap at our own pace, whenever we saw someone with a puncture, pulled over and gave a tube and got them on their way. All we did in return was take a photo for the blog :P

This is a fair enough train of thought. If you are hoping that people will be generous and help you out, vs being stranded of legitimate reasons.

I think spares are starting to get to expensive to just give away.

I used to give a tube out here and there but think twice about doing it now.

How will you know if you don't ask? Assume?

Almost after every race a thread like this pops up.

If you are racing for 1st place or 311th place and cant waste time to stop, then dont.

If you are just there for the ride and not chasing time, stop to help.

If you dont have money to give spare parts aways, then dont,

If you have money to buy spare parts again, stop and help.

Happy to pause and ask if they ok, but as soon as I see they didn't bring their own tools or spares they are on their own to walk.

Always ask if I can help, no question.

Will give out what I can spare, i.e. not put myself at too much risk of not finishing because I gave away my last tube etc. But you'll get a piece of my mind too if you didn't bring kit.  I've given away a chain link because, why not? Someone can finish their ride happy and I'm sure they'll remember that next time they're packing for a race.  I also asked the guy to carry extras to help others out in future.

The few times I've had a problem, sure, people pass by but there are plenty who do ask if all is ok.

Sometimes I think people are suffering in their own little world and may be too zoned to see/respond to what's going on around them, if it's not a clear emergency.
