Are SA stage races too pro-orientated?

Hmmm... Thats just being silly. So you don't want TITLE sponsors in the Title of the event?

Sponsorship is what it is, without it...

I get salty's point - No problem with title sponsors, they pay the bills - but with the added "presented by Biogen"  the title becomes plain clumsy and cumbersome.

Think you have to balance giving maximum exposure to your sponsors without annoying your audience.

My biggest reason for NOT watching any racing on TV is:

1. Normally only on DSTV

2. Races in SA are too boring to watch. (MTB and especially Road)

Most MTB routes are cool to ride as an Amateur, but boring as hell to watch and the Pros make it look too easy. If organizers make the routes more interesting to watch, then the mid packer finds it too tough and doesn't attend, so they dumb the routes down to keep the masses coming. So the TV coverage changes from seeing how incredible the front guys are to "where am I?"

Same with the road races, sheesh, even the Satellite race was won buy a sprinter, but at least it was done due to tack ticks, We don't have the depth in the Pro field to have 20 possible winners and this is also partly due to boring routes, no variety is given to develop different type of riders.

And have you watched some of the coverage that some of these "non racing" events gets. Its not the most exciting to watch.

I find it very hard to think of examples of any broadcasted sport events where amateurs feature prominently.

Maybe a bit of school rugby & the Comrades as mentioned but then only after the pro's are finished.

Sorry Hackster, but I think the idea that us amateurs would make great tv (for anyone other than ourselves) is a non-starter.

Ja, I hear you.

I guess I'm just frustrated with the formula that seems to be used for filming most stage races in SA.

To my mind it's boring because it tells only one story when there are a multitude of stories to be told.

We all know that stage races offer a whole bunch of different experiences.

Anyway, it was good to hear the different viewpoints on the subject. And I was relieved to see that my view is shared by quite a few. Thought I might be suffering from a case of Early Onset Grumpy Old Man Syndrome...

I think it would then also be fair to ask this.

Should corporate business/ financial news in the media not be more focussed on the janitors and their input?

Are you saying weekend warriors are on the same level as poo cleaners?

I get what the OP is trying to say. I also enjoy watching the "normal" people struggle up hills, crash face first, ripping their mates off at the water tables etc.. I can relate to them all and what it takes to finish races, but also the enjoyment we get out of it.

Having said that, I'm not saying I don't want to see the pro's and their 100 sponsors. Like the OP, I want to see a bit of both

and should we take people with less than 1000 post as seriously as those with more than a thousand?

Before it was called the bikehub -  in the days of Thehubsa I had more than a 1000.  Before Thehubsa I've already been a bike rider for 15years so who cares. If you want to be on tv train much harder   or get a gopro and share your experience with mates. However a amateurs only sports show will probably also have a fair share of the already limited viewers maybe (1/10) not sure it would be worth the sponsors moola..

Well, the Pioneer Trek brought to you by biogens and someone else has a cool social highlights clip today. More fun to watch than the boring race snakes upfront with their extremely insightful commentary at the end of every stage.

The Argus cycle tour was one.

Obviously they must cover the winners but I'd also like to see how people like me do in the race - hear some horror stories etc.

Watch the Ezelenduro video and you'll see what I mean. Somehow it feels pretty inclusive...

I am sure there would be more examples - my point is just that they are few and far in between.

I agree with hackster on that race coverage have settled on a boring formula - if they can come up with something different more people might be tempted to watch
