Getting bike quotes from shops - surprisingly difficult?

And if more than one shop gives you "the service, would you buy more than one bike and support both shops?

I'm buying one bike, whichever works out fit and budget wise.

Based on the replies in this thread though, I'm obviously a rarity in actually wanting to look at different bikes and make a choice. Most people apparently know exactly which bike they want when buying a new one.

Yes. Most of the people in this thread know exactly what they want because they are compulsive shopaholics who have been cycling for longer than they have had their hub accounts. Also, we go onto bike forums and ask stupid questions which helps.

Welcome to the club.

In all seriousness they often do, but then go through a process of looking for validation either from forums or LBS' or reviews....

The guys here will be more than willing to help, but usually don't respond positively to random posts like the first one.

As savage asked, what are the disciplines, budget, goals, preferred brand (just from perception) etc, you will get lots of advice here.

Budget, size, what type of riding would you like to do, is brand name important, are you going to race in CSA race categories?

Unlikely any race categories, at least in the near future. Size probably a small/51/52cm.

Name brand not particularly important.

Budget sub-R35k.

Had been looking at a slightly more endurance options, than the more pure race-spec bikes.

At the moment, BMC, Trek have seemed like fairly decent price/bike points, primarily because of selling off 2017 stocks.

Been a few occasions when I have been looking for a specific bike or part and ended up on a completely different end of the spectrum because I found something interesting along the way.

But it still depends on the attitude of that shop's mechanic :whistling:

depends if they have decent coffee or not.....and finish what they started.

Welcome.... and brace yourself...

Some people on here have not had their morning coffee yet..

Do you have any idea of what you are looking for? In terms of brand / size /specs etc?

I can DM you the details of my LBS who has always given me excellent service if that might help..

You see you can come ask a decent question, get 5 flippant retorts - but this is the one that makes it worthwhile!

good luck getting your bike ALza

Cool. Our budget is R40k boys. Lets get to work.

[Edit]: Get a Canyon.

he said 50k!

:P

Just kidding, OP.

Okay - so road, sub 35k, not racing competitively and looking more for an endurance based ride rather than an aggressively angled race machine.

Sounds like you'd benefit from bikes like the Spaz Roubaix and Giant Defy rather than the Giant Propel, Spez Venge or Tarmac.

Couple things I have noticed...

- If you a buy a "cheap" bike (under 30k - ridiculous that 30k is considered cheap - but I won't get into that), the urgency is not really there to sell.

- Bike shops are scared to quote because many consumers will take that quote to another shop to get pricing down where they guarantee they will beat any price (nothing wrong with it - we live in a capitalist society, I just think shops feel quoting is a waste of time).

There are still many shops out there that will get back to you in a matter of minutes, so in my opinion, take your business where it is wanted

Oh - in terms of arrivals of 2018 bikes, and the LBS's not being sure. That's not entirely surprising, to be honest. Lead times can be a difficult thing to manage, and pricing isn't always worked out until they actually land in the country.

Where are you based? A location would help some of us in recommending a good LBS.

Sounds like you are going to end up with a lekker Giant Defy Adnvanced

Nice 105 all round, disc brakes are great, endurance fit, comes in at R33k, maybe get a better price from Giant Cape Town, then throw some new rubber on there, some bottle cages and pedals and you are away for R35k with a lifetime warranty.

Could go a little more racey with the TCR at similar price point.
