Yup. Those same ones.  ;)

They also do things like Baviaans and 36One and 7weeks and K2C and Attakwas and Desert Dash and Trans Karoo...

Oh, yes. Those gravel races.

But let's be honest, if we got free entries we would do all these races mentioned, just for the fun of it.

I can't afford 17 different bikes for 17 different types of riding, so I want something that can ride everything. Decent on the trails, fast on the dirt roads, light enough on the climbs with decent gearing. And 2x11 is the only thing that meets all those requirements. (To be fair, I've barely used my baby chainring, but it's nice to know its there)

mmmm, not so sure. It's not the entry fee putting me off those races, it's all the pedaling. Just sitting and pedaling and pedaling and pedaling and pedaling and pedaling and pedaling

Rather fortuitous reading this thread today as actually had this discussion with the bike shop yesterday.

I have read and re-read this thread and still battle to make heads or tails of the spreadsheet and associated ratios so perhaps someone in the know can provide me with some assistance.

I currently run 1x11 SRAM set up with 30T blade and 10-42 cassette. I have plenty of granny gears but spin out on the flats and downhill. Was considering upping blade to 34T to see if that made a difference. Recommendation I received was to go the GX Eagle route with 34T upfront and 11-50 cassette.

Any thoughts?

I reckon its the way to go. Thanks to the EvoBikes CyberMonday special I'm going from a 2x10 XT setup with 38/26 up front and 11/36 cassette to Eagle GX. Crank comes with a 32 and I've ordered a 34 as well. So will be interesting to see how it all goes.

I just recently, well 2 weeks ago actually, went the 1x12 route. Coming from a 1x11 XT setup i now have the Eagle GX shifter, derailleur and chain, but the 11-50 Sunrace cassette...

On my 1x11 setup i ran a 32t upfront, but with the 1x12 setup now i changed to a 34t upfront.

I haven't yet needed the 50 at the back but i'm very happy with the change, not only for gear ratio aspect but the shifting on this eagle is just so much better than the XT.

The 34t upfront does make a difference on the flats though.

+1 the shifting is incredible.. i had the e thirteen 9-46 with Xx1 shifter and derailure. For me the Gx is just better..Glad i made the upgrade...

If you want to go the 12 speed route thats up to you. However you sound like you are nice and fit and a strong climber. Changing to a 32 or 34 would help you on the flats and a little harder on the climbs. The 12 speed option would give you a bit both.

Changing the chain ring to 32 or 34 or even getting both is cheaper.

I have just gone 1x11 with a 34 oval and the Sunrace 11-50 cassette. With Sram shifters and derailleur.

Unfortunately I just missed the BF specials.

That is coming from 1x10 with a 32 oval and 11-42 Sunrace cassette with Shimano shifter and derailleur.

For now I have resisted going 1x12 and am enjoying the 1x11 ratios. Compared to my previous setup I have greater top end speed and spin out less. While that 50 granny is there if I need her.

This is my first time giving Sram a try and surprisingly I seem to prefer Sram's click efficiency over Shimano's. That is comparing slx/xt and gx.

Rode a mate's bike today which is 2x10 - 28/36T upfront and 11-36 (I think) cassette - rode the Spruit which is nowhere near any of the climbing you do in CT but has one or two long gradual climbs which I managed on the 36T - in fact did the whole ride on the 36T (large blade).

28/36t seems a bit odd, if the constant is the 28t a Shimano set up would allow you go upto 28/40t while Sram takes you to 28/42t provided that the derailleur would allow this. But that 42x11 combo will have a 55km/hr+ before you spin out.
