Why do they only talk about half of it? Are they unable to see only half from a test?

So the rate of metabolism of a substance in the body decreases as the amount remaining decreases, so the rate is non linear.

So two reasons why half life is use:

  • Because of this non linear rate, measuring exactly the point in time where the amount reaches 0 would is very difficult because you need very accurate measurements.
  • But more important: by using half life to measure the the rate, we don't need to define the starting amount. The half life will be the same if you start and 10 or 100 or 1000.

I saw that some people were defending the dude saying its the sport that drives the need to dope.

Ummm, sport has always be and always will be a competition to see who can win. Some people just have less morals than others.

That's what I said..... :whistling:

Interesting 2012 article on blood doping with Cera mentioned. Also some stuff on the Blood Passport. http://www.bloodjournal.org/content/118/9/2395?sso-checked=true

For context, Tyler Hamilton suggested Postal micro-dosed every second day with 10 units/kg at night, so that they were 'clear' for a morning visit by the testers.

Snippets from the link below:

Another difficulty relates to the fact that once [Hb] has been raised in athletes by the administration of recombinant ESAs, only microdoses or less frequent injections of the drugs are needed to maintain [Hb] at the high level.39 In this situation, the window of detection of rhEpo in urine is only 12-18 hours,40 compared with about 3 days on regular dosing (50 U/kg body weight 3 times a week).41 Thus, although the detection of rhEpo in urine is effective if the injection frequency is high, this is certainly not the case when the injection rate is reduced to weekly injections.35

Because darbepoetin-alfa has a 3- to 4-fold longer half-life (24-26 hours)42 than the epoetins (6-8 hours), the window of detection of darbepoetin-alfa is prolonged to approximately 7 days.43,44 CERA has an even longer half-life of approximately 6 days.45

Plutonium-238 has a half-life of 88 years . . . . .

But that's not the only reason not to eat it

And water has a half-life of 10 days in the human body. Definitely a good reason to not drink it. Far better to consider a diuretic like beer!

Keep in mind that half-life elimination models are just that, models. Some compounds do not not fit so well into that model, caffeine being a great example. It is the same issue that caused a lot of controversy surrounding meldonium.

Iron has one of 2.6million years, which is why things that are ironic can be hard to understand.
