Fine for using Thule scissor bike rack

How is this sales people being rubbish?

I assume he means the salespeople should have advised those with license plate obstructing racks to get the plate/light add-on hanger. And Fortuner drivers to get the Thule protective plate.

None of which applies to buying online...

When I bought my Thule the helpful salesman advised me to drive with the invoice in the car to show any cop it's still new and to get a plate made within a week.

You can't really blame salespeople though, knowledge of the law is your own responsibility

Seen many of these fines at the Argus cycle event.

YES - it IS illegal to obscure the number plate.

Using the scissor rack for a longer trip I made a plate and lights board.

later bought the platform rack, and immediately got a number plate for it

A warning for those going through the George area. I received a fine for using the standard tow bar mounted scissors type bike rack with a single mountain bike. It supposedly blocked the number plate. I have never seen a second number plate used with these racks. Anyone know the legality or otherwise of using these racks without a second number plate. It was at a routine road block on the N2.

A couple of years back at the Route44 race in Nigel the cops were pulling over people leaving the race traveling back to Joburg...

if you didn't have a Number Plate you go a find,

if you had a number plate you go fined because the wheels on the bike were obstructing the Indicators and brake lights.

soon after that the the Thule Rideon style racks( the ones with Number plate and lights became very popular

They sold the customer something and then you get a fine. That's pretty bad in my opinion. They could have said make sure the number plate is visible. And do an add on sale.

So if I buy a pair of wire cutters and don’t turn the mains off before cutting wires and mur off a ladder while getting shocked and break my neck, its the wire cutter salesman’s fault?

well, yes, according to bikehub logic.

Not arguing the legality of the fine, just stating that I have been driving with mine allot with zero issues, so assumed it is one of those laws that are not really enforced, like stopping dead at a 4 way stop.

Might be worth it to spend a couple of bucks to construct myself one of those boards with lights attached just to be on the safe side.

I got a fine through the post this week - ZAR 1500 - apparently for failing to stop at a stop sign, which I don't remember but might have done.  The cops didn't stop me at the time - I didn't even see them.  Thought it was a bit harsh.  Can they do this?

Paid R300 in the same area.

I now have a plate with the plastic backing plate glued with rubber on four elastics and a hook which pulls the plate tight against the protruding arms. Does not touch the bike and takes 2mins to install.

If I'm not mistaken, according to the law, whenever your towbar ball obscure the number plate one is supposed to fit one at a different place where it's clearly visible.

I ain't commenting on traffic control (and basically all SA law enforcement's  ) inability to prioritise, hence the road death toll and the drone like Kristofferson ditty "We don't need no hairy headed hippies. Scarin' decent folks like you and me, no siree. So thank your lucky stars you've got protection. Walk the line, and never mind the cost. And don't wonder who them lawmen was protecting.".  But I do have a rack with number plate and lights.

But you may well be asked to produce your vehicle registration papers or licence disc when you want a copy of the licence plate as this stops false number plates being made; yeah right. :w00t: .  I try to always carry a spare in case one gets lost  On a long trip, multiple fines for the same offence could add up.

At least they are spending millions on signage around Durban..."don't text and drive"...maybe a few thousand spent on fuel for police cars to catch and fine people for texting while driving...or a few of these number plate cops could fine people for something that causing more accidents and kills people [emoji35]

I put my bike in my hatchback when it's 1 bike. When it's 2 bikes it's on the bike rack and for longer distances I strap on the Holdfast number plate holder with a 2nd plate in there. It is the law after all and takes just 1 minute on and off the rack.

I have had weird looks from other cyclists but hey it does avoid fines.
