other than the obvious, what other health risks with biting fingers off ?

A bit of blood might be involved, so HIV might be a possibility, but anything else ?

Seeing this question, I'm now wondering about whatever gross things were under the fingernail...

(just for Gen, I hope the mugger didn't use it to pick his nose or scratch his ass or something... ;) )

Hi guys,

I was there. Here's some info:

There were two guys walking along the path (next to the marks park fence) in the same direction as the cyclists. Not paying any attention to the cyclists so they didn’t seem threatening. This was clever because they forced the cyclists to slow right down - there’s nowhere to pass pedestrians on that path - so the cyclists were doing walking pace as they pulled up behind the muggers. The guys then stepped to the side of the path to let the cyclists go past but as soon as they went by, they were grabbed from behind. With no momentum they were easily brought down. The first cyclist fell left, rolling down the hill a bit. The attacker left his bike and went after him, lunging to try and stab him. Fortunately the cyclist fought back long enough for a runner, coming in the opposite direction, to get involved. He ended up getting the most serious cut - fortunately only on his shin, so he’ll be ok. The attacker lost the advantage and fled. The cyclist suffered minor cuts. The second cyclist was not with the first, but was too close to be able to stop and turn around. The second attacker lunged for him. The cyclist dropped his bike and immediately offered his cellphone. The attacker took it and also fled.

In the few seconds it took to comprehend what was going on the attackers ran down the hill and straight towards the storm water drain that channels the spruit into the Botanic Gardens. I’m pretty certain that’s how they entered and exited. We gave chase but they were gone by the same we got back down.

There was no park security anywhere to be found, not even in the parking lot.

I've already written to the local DA councilor and asked him to take it up with SAPS and City Parks. We really need to find a permanent solution to this.

I remember reading about a similar event happening around 2014.

A rider was doing that little loop at the top (around the few trees and up against the Judith Rd fence) when he was attacked by someone running out from the stream. After a short scuffle, the attacker retreated with his loot through the stormwater culvert at the fence.

I can't find the Hub link but I swear I did read about it here. I'll keep searching.

Can someone please find out from the cyclist if it is true that the same force biting through a carrot is needed to bite off a finger?

Just stick your finger in your mouth and try..... easy peasy....  :) :) :)

Would be like a stick of biltong if you got it on the jointline -  not too hard - but not all that easy through the bone.

Grant Usher was the cyclist.

What we know for sure is that the human bite can be very infectious!

So for me the obvious question is have the police or anyone else asked the nearby hospitals or medical services if someone has come in without a finger.... surely they need to be notified?

I highly doubt it, that seems way too CSI for people that are most gifted at hinting for a 2L cool drink when they pull you over.

Fixed that for you

There have been multiple attacks there Ross - seems to be an all-too regular occurrence.

I went for a gentle afternoon ride and just before I got to the top of Emmerentia fence line a guy came walking toward me holding his arm. He had just been attacked and stabbed and had his cellphone stolen. This in a busy park were plenty of people walk their dogs. Thieves are brazen and not scared to kill someone for something as small as a cellphone!!! Lucky I was a minute slower or it could have been me bleeding ????????

Was he a Walker, Runner, or Cyclist?
