..... To the OP, sorry to hear about this traumatic incident, glad you guys did not get hurt in any way, you can be thankful that you all came through it alive.

I just re-posted the FB post on here from the "Johannesburg Social MTB Group", I wasn't involved :-)

Cyclists are such easy targets,

Its easier than robbing a vodacom shop because there is no security guards.

Cellphones at 10 to 20k a pop.

.............

The bit I don't understand is surely there is no value in a top end stolen smart phone eg apple, the phone is going to get locked out and frozen and is potentially traceable.  You certainly wouldnt be able to re-set your own iphone without all the codes. Is there a way that they can crack them or are various android phones easier to reset and sell on?

spare parts I think, sell them to dodgy cellphone repair places and they strip them.. cant make much from each device..

[conspiracy theory] stolen phones make a lot of money for the networks and manufacturers. Too much for them to actually care about it properly.

Got a brick / rock thrown (from the side) at my car there some time ago - luckily I swerved and it hit the door instead of the windscreen.

(IIRC a teacher from Rustenburg got killed on that stretch of road by an object thrown through the windscreen :(

Nathrix, it happened between the 2 toll gates on the old N4 into Pta, opposite Saulsville

A post complaining about breaking the law by stealing, while the cyclists cycled where it is illegal to cycle?

The guys were hiding in the bush between the two lanes. In other words they launched their attack from the right hand side of the group. The group was quite aware of their surroundings focussed to the left. The three gentleman appeared from the right. A 9mm was brandished and used more than once by shooting into the tarmac. Cars passed but no one stopped. Sad state of affairs.

That portion of road won't see me anytime soon. For a whole bunch of reasons.

It's not the busiest of roads. maybe 20 years ago before the N4 Platinum Highway was built.

Problem is your Life insurance won't pay out if you die while riding illegally on a Highway.

Sadly, in this world there are people/shops/businesses who will buy and strip down stolen cars, bikes, motos, phones, laptops . . . . They'll even melt down your wedding ring if someone steals it from you. :-(

I get the breaking the law part but there is one moer of a big difference between robbing someone at gunpoint and cycling on a piece of not really used highway where you rarely find more than 10 cars on the entire stretch.  One of those scenarios affects others (trauma or worse) and the other doesn't.

Really? Sure it's illegal to ride there - but that's a completely different issue all-together. If someone is driving at 70km/hr in a 60 zone and gets killed by a drunk driver must we not address the issue because the guy that got killed was 10km/hr over the speed limit? Sure it's wrong, but pointing that out really doesn't address the root issue.

This could have (and has) happened at many spots where it is legal to cycle.
