Absa Cape Epic 2018

I shall await the abuse that is sure to come my way.

The idea of only allowing teams of two to ride is unfair. It costs a fortune to prepare and get to a big event. Then, something completely out of a persons control happens and they have to withdraw. All the partner can now do is ride the balance of an event as a vicious training ride but they will not be recorded as a finisher.

Events need to allow individual timing. Sure, let the Epic allocate prize monies to intact teams but also allow solo riders (as starters!) to enter, ride and be recognised as an official finisher.

Two person teams only? Bollocks!

I remember this conversation from last year, every year it gets raised, with some good points and counter points.  At the moment the Epic is marketed as a team sport, and life happens, it might not be fair on your partner, it might be frustrating knowing that even if you finish you won't be receiving a finishers medal.  But at the moment that is what you sign up for if you gets sponsored or take out the moolla yourself.

Will they change, maybe, but think that they would rather want to continue to focus on the team approach seeing that the race is sold out every year.

Would assume he won't be starting in the front group, at best they could allow the UCI leopards to start before the general pack, else it will be a ride from far back

No ways....expect Nino up front gunning it. He's prepared for the toughest Epic and he will use it as a build up to the XC season. Keep to the season plan. No way is he going to change anything. Without having to pull Stirni along....I reckon he will be at the sharp end until the finish (without interfering).

If you lose a partner, but finish you are recorded as a finisher, and you get a finishers medal - but you don't get a team finish position, and you can't win any prizes.

Ok that so they do get something.  Thanks for letting me know, so the only thing is you don't ride anymore for an official position.

either he'll then take A silent victory ( just blast through the course solo ) or he'll be chasing hard to catch the uci leaders .....Nino ain't gona take this as A ride to the finish type deal

This Epic looks a bit short. Longest day 122km?

What of the properly Epic days in the past..?

This should probably be called the epic.  Small e.

(Hope they got a discount for epic lite.)

What I heard from the guys that have ridden that area before, although the km might appear less the difficulty is still up there.  The surface plays a big role which can sap more energy than long "easy" climbs and straight district roads.

I'm thinking this is more tongue in cheek?

In any case, as somebody famous said yesterday at Prologue, the Epic is as hard as you make it. Totally dependent on your training and riding speed - and your partner's!

I recon the drought ravaged areas add another level of dust, rocks, bumps etc. to the equation. So overall, the four 100+ km days in row will have a lot of broken riders spat out the back.

Gonna be interesting for sure - especially to also see the Pro's handle this. Already many a victim claimed.......

So... I have a question which I have theories to..

Why do SO many racers get stomach bugs in the lead up to an event like this or during?

Didn't Amy Beth suffer from a severe stomach bug that nearly cost her and Ariane the Cape Pioneer Trek?

SO many.. top end and mid packers alike.

Let the theories and comments flow....

The Woolworth sandwich handed out at the end of the stage did me in once, and that was the last WW sandwich I will ever eat.

Rode a section on the motorbike after work tonight that they will be riding tomorrow in Ashton.

So glad I dont have to do it on a bicycle.

I've ridden this specic piece off trail hundreds off times with the motorbike, but never on my mtb. I intend keeping it that way.

Gatstamp, klippe and a shitty little downhill with a loose rocky climb. Not long, just not a nice sigle/jeep track

Stage 1 saw the end of any hope for defending champion Esther Süss when her Meerendal CBC partner Angelika Tazreiter was knocked off her bike by a rider from another batch who caught them. The crash injured Tazreiter ‘s shoulder and she was forced to withdraw early on in the stage

This is very sad, understand it is part of mtb and won't know the full story (except if it was filmed maybe).
