Hmmmm, I think this is a factory defect.

So my boss has been riding this bike for the last 6-7 years and he only rides on the road or occasionally at Northern Farms (Which isn't really mtbing  :whistling:).

He came to me last week to put it up for sale as he upgraded to a 29er. After the first potential buyer met up with him over the past weekend he came back to me and told me that he didn't sell it as he noticed something on the frame which concerned him.

Fast forward to the pictures and have a look and let me know what you guys think - I was gobsmacked to say the least! I've never seen something like this and I honestly feel that this had to be a factory defect.

Because this frame is older than 5 years (Scott Aspect) I will need some advice on where to get it repaired if at all possible

Looks like a 2008 Scott Scale, I doubt it can be repaired. It might have been caused by the incorrect size headset cups being pressed into the head tube, hard to say...

It sounds like a very important transaction

Could be a number of things, improperly installed headset cups, riding with a loose headset that isn't tightened correctly etc etc .... almost impossible to say that this is or isn't a factory defect.

Your best and only real point of resolution is to get it to a Scott dealer who will deal with Scott directly and they'll provide the best scenario to work from.

Not necessarily a factory defect, as has been mentioned, riding with a loose headset, and or incorrect replacement headset forced in OR a correct sized replacement forced in skew can all do this kind of damage...

I have seen a GT have similar damage from a frontal impact, no damage to front wheel or fork but the frame was cracked and bent like this...the lady riding the bike also didn't crash, she carried on riding and just mentioned the handling was a bit weird. So even if he didn't crash a frontal impact could have caused a small crack and it developed over time to what you see today...

Not sure of the warranty period of Scotts either I have a feeling it may be 5 years (stand to be corrected) so if he has had it for 6-7 years then it is well outside that period.

What is proper MTB Robbie? From your profile picture, you look to be on a short travel hardtail eating up a jeep track.

Shots fired!

Thanks everyone, I've never seen or rode the bike so I cant really answer much more than what I can see on the images  :D

Think the bottom line for him is to give it to me so I can use the parts

Dibs on the fork

Just be careful with your wording. There is a Hubber called MTB Robbie.

Someone seems to be a bit sensitive about Northern Farms not being considered hard-core MTB-ing by others

It's not a technical trail. I am simply pointing out the obvious.. Maybe you missed it.
