Talk to me about numb hands

I raised the front of the seat yesterday and although it was a bit more comfortable for my butt it didn’t help with the hands at all.

I do think that I’m just too weight forward as I can barely hold myself up at that angle when I take my hands off the bars for a second or two.

That is carpal tunnel. There are 2 "main nerves" going to your hand. The one nerve reguates the pinkie and outer half of ring finger, and with the other nerve the rest of the hand.

Had my right hand repaired some 20+ years ago, need to get the left done sometime...

Go check there's been a fred on it.

Yes, but I had the op years ago before I started riding bike again. What I found once I started riding was that on long rides the numbness would come back. Fortunately I can manage it with grips and gloves. Silicone grips and those Grail gloves did it for me.

In fact no gloves is just as good, but I broke both my hands moering off at 78kph when I was a laatie wearing no gloves so I have learnt that lesson.

A lot has to do with your bike setup. Your saddle should be level in my opinion to start with. Then check the height of the handlebars in relation to the saddle.

Perhaps raise the bars for a while to take the weight off your arms and hands.

I used to ride for many years and had a substantional lay off before I started riding again last year. My hands also went numb and still do but the more time I spend on the bike the better it gets.

I also get pressure numbness on the ulnar or outside of the hands .For me going to thinner grips helped to grip more with my thumb, forefinger, middle finger and thus there is less pressure on the outside .The lack of core strength cannot be over stressed as a major contributor

For some reason I didn't use padded gloves for a ride or two and the numbness disappeared. Now I use my old gloves who's padding is no longer or cheap workshop anti slip gloves from the local co-op or Midas.

Before Eldron ducked to Damnmark, yes still bitter, he did set ups for me on all my bikes. Now I don't have to look for the thickest padding I can find in gloves and get to wear all the thin cool Troy Lee gloves I've been stashing for 10 years. My issue was definitely too much weight on my wrists.

Almost everyone mentioned bike fit - very important, but I also find if you have larger hands then a thicker grip works better.

On my hardtail I have a cheap pair of ryder grips. They are extremely comfy, I find the shape supports the back of my hand nicely.

What kind of riding do you mainly do? Those are fine for XC type of stuff, but when things get gnarly they definitely compromise bike handling IMO

Pretty much XC type stuff, including a few old man jumps on the singletrack.

Bar ends....

Hat.. Coat...door...

Those did help on my previous bike..... but oh the shame

Shot.

I will get the bars raised when she goes in for her first service / tightening.

Start with the very basics, ensure your hand position is similar to the pics below.

Try position the brakes and levers so you can reach them with your hands in a neutral position (straight line) and not "bent" or "twisted" excessively.

IMO numbness is an indication of either a restriction, circulation or nerve leading to the affected limb.
