I've contacted  Garmin locally but they're not very helpful.

I'd just like to know, does an Edge 520 show smartphone notifications if paired?

Whatsapp, Gmail, phone calls, messages etc?

I'm actually glad its only sms's and calls. If it's important enough it warrants a call. Riding your bike should be your happy place away from the world.

Notifications are optional. I would have liked the option of WhatsApp. It makes meeting up with the group easy (rather than stop to take out your phone to see who is late etc) or miss messages from my wife (I am out with the kids, so dont rush home)

Most of the wearables have it now, so dont understand why the bigger units cant or dont.

Something to do with the software or Operating System. Whatever Garmin's explaination was, it didn't make sense to me.

you get caller ID and first line of SMS IIRC... that's enough to either stop and action the alert, or ignore completely. would be nice to have whatsapp, being such a pervasive messaging platform

It's my happy place indeed... but not away from the world.

If my missus or work (my drivers etc) messages me I'd like to be able to see it straight away.

There is a page on Garmin Connect where you can choose which smart notifications you want (it lists all the apps on your phone), but it seems that the only notifications that actually go through are SMS and Phone calls.

I have Google searched this extensively over the past year or so. Several people around the world have the same question, and the answer is always the same.

I think you need to load the whatsapp/gmail app to the garmin? I automatically get calls and sms but opted not to bother with the others. I also loaded street maps for RSA so don't want to add extra apps that take up memory.

My wife knows that if its an emergency while I am out riding she must call or sms as I wont get/hear a whatsapp.

well... I'm not buying one if I can't..

I'd rather wait till it's definitely available.

I'll get by on my V800 (which shows all notifications......EXCEPT during training  :cursing: )till then

Your missus and drivers don't do sms?

But yes, a bit of an oversight that it can't handle whatsapp and other notifications. That said for me personally the tons of "nonsense" notifications that comes through on my whatsapp groups would be hugely distracting if it pops up on my Garmin, not even mentioning the other apps.

For me the phone calls and sms's work fine.
