LBS funny excuses and "Explanations"

Had a broken rear axle on the MTB. Very difficult part to get as it was from a set of Chinese wheels. Was upgrading from 10s to Eagle as well so needed a freehub. Just ordered a new hub from China with XD driver. Take it all to the LBS, "Swap out the axle for the new one and put the XD driver on".

Get there and the guys have rebuilt the rim onto the new wheel with new spokes and the new hub I provided. Asked why they didn't just swap the axle out: "I guess we where just in wheelbuilding mode".

Credit where it's due, the LBS covered the labour and I paid for the spokes, but it was just quite funny :)

WHAAAAT? Has never hear of ring spanner or socket with Torque wrench?

Oh ja, that reminds me when my brother popped at a LBS next to a trail to tighten crank.

ME: "Do you have a torque wrench to tighten it"

Tech: No we do it by hand else you overtighten it"

My boet and I had to use a 600mm bar on the allen key to get the crank of when we got home.

This is the cap on the top of the stanchion that is normally loosened by hand to top up the air pressure.

Same, thing at the 'new' Boksburg store, ordered extra lenses for Adidas Evil Eyes, even provided them with the number (this was towards the end of 2016). Excuses for 2 weeks, eventually they told me I cannot get those lenses in South Africa because nobody has stock and will only be in the country in 3 months. Bumped into an Adidas rep at a race, asked and had my lenses 2 days later.

Some time ago I was killing time in a Pretoria shop in their nice “coffee-department” , the sales person was doing his/her best to sell the customer into a Momsen Vipa. To their credit, they really knew the Vipa particularly well. Then the comparing started with other brands, and it was probably on par for a sales person to only look at what they do not like on something else. This was where it got interesting, the client then asked how does a Merida compare with a Vipa? The sales person made a comment which led me to pull a neck muscle and spill my beverage…. “Merida is only an entry level bike, you will be wasting your time and money. Merida has no product at pro level.”

Although I am no fan of a Momsen or a Merida I just had to break my silence, asked the young dude if he had ever heard of a person called Gunn-Rita Dahle, and if he had perhaps heard of Multivan Merida, off course I was met with a blank stare.

I don't make much effort to hide it, I'm mot a fan of Cycle Lab at all. In my experience their sales consultants are misinformed, clueless, or push you into an XC bike no matter what you say. Was told by one of their guys while looking for an XT trail pedal that they are not available in SA because we don't really have trail riding. Went down the road to Lynnwood Cyclery and helped myself to one of the many sets they had on the floor...

Quagga you spend a lot of time at the LBS's

HAHA

Not really

We are a group of about 9 riding together and we all service our bikes now at my place. We bought the tools we need, and put in my Garage. Everyone has own bottle of sealant in the cubboard and we an ipad to teach us how to do certain things like bleeding brakes.

Then we look at the video and start doing what one should. That is when the stories come out.

You know last time when I took my bike in for service this is what I was told, or you know when I had to get new gear cable outers the told me bla bla

So we all learn together and we did not ALL have buy expensive tools each. So we have ONE high torque wrench, and ONE 27mm socket etc rather than one each.

Also one compressor etc.

So 9 dudes playing with each others tools, in your garage with every man having his own sealant

...right!

The owner of my LBS told my friend, just starting out, after servicing his bike that 26ers are 30% slower than 29ers. 30% boss, that is is some serious gains there.

So I also got this same rigmaroll, ordered the part through CycleLab - after 6 weeks and a bunch of phone calls, and excuse after excuse it never showed up. So what you can do instead is to wrap a towel around it and use a monkey wrench - no damage, and works very well.

That tool is famous for being difficult to get hold of. I was totally amazed that the bike shop got it so quickly. I actually also ordered one on eBay, thinking the bike shop would never come through. Then I had two, gave one to a mate.
