UM... Willie made it into the break and scored a big fat DNF. Credit where credit is due - it was in a world tour event and the quality of the field was incredible.

But credit where credit is due... Clint made the winning break and netted a Bronze for himself and team SA - also against a top quality field

Henry beating a Brownlee in a top class field was an outstanding achievement, Simbane beating Blake in a top class field was an outstanding achievement.

Clint getting bronze against a field that barely had a handful of people in the UCI top 200 was a good result against a decent field.

Edit: Not a single rider at the commonwealth was good enough to make the START the Amstel Gold....

Can't you give credit where credit is due for a fellow countryman.....btw you do know that most of the front runners from AUS and NZ rides for Worldtour Teams how does one expect them to travel for 20hours from AUS to Netherlands to compete ????????‍♂️????????‍♂️????????‍♂️????????‍♂️

There is nothing to get emotional about. The competition at the CWG was sub par, nothing we can do about it. But a medal is a medal non the less.

Unfortunately that is what is becoming of the CWG. Combined the mens and ladies marathon had about 40 competitors, and the winning times was club level. We cant blame athletes like Ashleigh for giving it a skip.

Its the timing of the event..it clashed with some really big races..races that are very important for the athletes careers.

That being said...take nothing away from. Hendriks..he competed against a field that is probably level with him and brought home a medal so well done to him and congratulations.

I haven't really followed the CWG, but how strong was the MTB field and how many Olympic & World Champion podium contenders did Alan Hatherly beat for his bronze? Can't imagine it was a particularly strong field but I also haven't seen thehub hammer this point home before congratulating him?

I guess the nice thing about the CW medal is that few years from now the thing people will see on on Alan & Clint's wiki pages is that they won a CW medal, nobody will have a clue or care how strong (or not) the competition was.

Good point - I'll quote Eldron on this one "Clint getting bronze against a field that barely had a handful of people in the UCI top 200 was a good result against a decent field."

With the "self sponsor" stance of S.A. Cycling when riders actually qualify for Olympics or CWG I am surprised there where any S.A. cyclists. Whether it is MTB or Road. Besides if you are not in a world tour team and get called up to do some international racing, wouldn't you also try anything just to go? The reverse when you are on a world tour team and would rather race for them?

Don't blame any of our riders for where they where racing. And good job those that had good showings and medals

I think Dan McConnell was the only "other" name there.

Yup - commonwealth bronze will be on their palmares forever.

Jeez.. Why the hate...I really don't care about it all because I'm only an annual roadie fan in July... But...a medal is a medal.

Alan Hatherley... Got a whole thread for his medal with heaps of praise.. But the Swiss french Germans czechs and Italians were also not there. It may be argued that he is nowhere currently in the Pro circuit.. Why the double standards between disciplines

Hate? Honesty is probably a better description.

Hatherly finished within 20 seconds of the winner of the first World Cup XCO race this year (albeit with a Gaze puncture). Also - wasn't most of that thread about Gaze being a jerk rather than Hatherly praise?

To be fair - Hendriks scalped a few Pro Tour riders (including Lantern Rouge Rowe) but with CWG wedged in between PR and Amstel Gold Hendriks  was never going to race against the worlds best.

There is always double standards. Turn back the clock 15 years or so when road racing ruled the roost. Greg Minnaar had just taken his first ever world championship (I think the cup) which made him one of the best at the time in the world for his disapline.

This apparently still wasn't enough and Robert Hunter, despite having no credible results got the SA cyclist of the year award. Seems all he needed to win was to ride in a pro tour team.

This started a whole debate and the answer was in future to split the Cyclist of the Year Award between mtb and road.
