Not the kind of discussion that will be to the taste of everyone, but more for the people who need to turn they ZAR'e over a couple of times to get the value....

For a couple of years now I have frequented the Decathlon chain of stores in Italy, Germany or France to purchase sporting goods for my kids (they grow faster than what they can wear anything out). I got to know Decathlon because they test their consumer goods in our laboratories in Europe to European standards for quality and safety.

For myself I have bought knee and arm warmers from them for what can be described as precious little money.

They opened a megastore in Alberton and a pop-up store in Greenstone. Shortly there will be another in Centurion.

I visited them again today to buy track suits for the kids and also walked out with MTB Baggies (without liner) and paid R284 a pair.

So if you want to do yourself (and your wallet) a favour, consider a Decathlon even before you go to Mr Price, and from my experience the quality if better.

Where else can one shop and get real value for money?

Agreed , i have been into their shops both Edenvale and Alberton and found some good deals not necessary cycling apparel but other goods like gloves and takkies .

I have visited several Decathlon Stores in France (Narbonne, Perpignan, Paris) on several occasions when abroad.

Even back in the day when they carried the famous name brands, as well as their own brands.

They changed their business model, and are now just selling their own brands, but the quality is extremely good and great value for money. I like the fact that in France they tailor the stock in the various stores to suit the local sports of that particular area, so Coastal stores carry more surfing, windsurfing gear, inland might have more have rock climbing, kayaking etc etc

Also visited the Alberton store last week for the first time, and it was like pleasantly stepping back into France.

Left with 3 wetsuits for the family, and several smaller items all at a fraction of the costs one faces at Mr Price, and Sportsmans warehouse, and the surf shops.

Well worth the mission.

I visited and purchased cycling shoes from then in Spain. Well prices and good quality  - B'TWIN

I was really disappointing with what they have to offer for cycling at Greenstone, Edenvale.

Perhaps early days...

Agree, compared to some of the stores in France and Italy there is hardly cycling stock. In one of their Mega stores outside of Paris the cycling department alone was larger than the store in Greenstone.

Agree with Li Mu Bai, their stores in Europe focus on the regional sports, their stores close to the Alps will have one drooling for climbing, hiking and skiing gear.

The Decathlon shops here in Kuwait are pretty expensive. I bought some gloves for gym from them tho and they are pretty decent. Keen to check them out when we are at home.

I bought two pairs of decathlon bib shorts in 2015 when training for the 2016 Sani. You get different quality options across their ranges, normally 3 options. I bought the top option.

I still ride with those shorts to this day. I have bought a couple of kids mtb’s from them over the years and have been very impressed. We also buy horse riding stuff from them, actually I have tents, jackets, jerseys, backpacks, hydration packs, hiking gear, ground sheets, sleeping bags etc etc and have found the quality great, as long as you don’t go for their entry level stuff - ever.

Did they sell armoured vests, knee pads, gun holsters and an alternative to TapOut shirts?

Decathlon was always my go-to store for well priced ski clothing when I was in the UK.

Glad they are in SA now - always good to have options.

They actually sell really nice hunting pants/shirts and all the kit you need if you have hunting dogs.

No Tappit or Tap-Out shirts......

Man, you are still there, we need to have a coffee some time!

Yes, those stores in Q8 are costly! But most things are.

Bit of a scrum getting past the car guards - none of that in France.

They do sell archery equipment too, which might be handy when venturing down south again...

There is an alternative to Tappit shirts?
