I just bought a Scott .... VERY HAPPY.

Your question is too vague. May as well ask which colour bike to buy.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your riding experience

 

I ride about 8000 - 10 000 km's a year, 100k plus meters of climbing. Mostly off-road, very few manicured trails. Rocky, loose, overgrown, find your own path type terrain. I do a couple of stage races a year,but like a marathon/endurance type race every once in a while. I need a dual bike that will be as nippy and punchy as my current scott hardtail, but will save me a bit on the bumpier stuff especially when riding a couple of days in a row. Due to my remote location sending parts (like a brain shock) for a service won't happen very often.

 

As far as colour goes, can I get a SAGAN custom sprayjob?  :lol:

Epic Evo? 120mm front, 100mm rear, it ticks a load of modern geo boxes and is a fantastic do it all race/every day SA trail bike.

 

But these days most bikes are able to tick a lot of boxes.

 

Our trails aren't steep enough for these super slack monsters and riding a big bike slowly is more difficult than riding a nippy bike.

 

I wouldn't go full retard on a full race bike, but the Evo looks hot and feels rad.

I would strongly advise going with the Scott RC team, Is real value for money compared to the other brands. The 2018 model is currently on special. Awesome bike, Its light and is a race machine with awesome trail capability. I have done lots of research as i was in the same boat as you currently are, 100% happy with the RC900. The review below is pretty much spot on of what to expect from the bike.

Awesome thanks man. I'd suggest you opt for  alight trail bike fitted with Fox or Rock Shox suspension in standard factory tune (nothing proprietary)

Based on this, I wouldn't go for the RC or the Epic. I would start at the Camber / StumpyST / non RC Spark. I test rode the Spark 910 and the RC pro back to back. Same spec besides the 34mm fork and dropper. The RC was slightly quicker on keep track like climbs. But on descents, the 910 was a fair bit quicker, and felt much easier to ride and more forgiving. The RC felt more racy but a bit twitchy on the downs. But the 910 is deceptively quick on the climbs and definitely more fun on the rough stuff.

 

Haven't ridden the Specialized ones but based on research should be quite similar

Yes, but "Mostly off-road, very few manicured trails. Rocky, loose, overgrown, find your own path type terrain" points towards a trail bike

But either way, (to the OP) you should test the options available, RC, non RC, Epic Stumpy ST etc. And preferably on trails to see which you prefer.
