The definitive answer in trainers:  https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/10/annual-trainer-recommendations.html

I haven't used either of the two you are looking at.  DC's review will give you good info.

But from hearsay:

Wahoo:  probably the industry leader at the moment in indoor trainers.  The kickr is rock solid.

Cyclops:  probably the most customer focused of the suppliers in SA.  Also great products but I've found their pricing to be at the upper end of the scale.

I have a Powerbeam pro. Really awesome on Zwift. With after sales service even better.

But remember to compare apples with apples.

The Kickr is n direct drive trainer.

Best to compare the Snap with Powèrbeam.

Anyone to give an objective view on Wahoo Kickr vs Powerbeam Pro ?

Thanks

You should be comparing the Kickr with the Hammer as they are in a similar price bracket.

I have a hammer and love it - fantastic piece of equipment.

I have mates who have the Kickr and they also swear by it.

Which ever way you go, definitely go for a direct drive unit, they are much better than the original wheel on trainers

Thanks for the kind words on the Wahoo products.

Just as a side note on customer services. We now have two full time customer Service staff members to assist with any customer query or hardware issue. We also stock all replacement and service parts for the trainers.

We strive to be the leaders in customer support for indoor trainers.

Powerbeam Pro is bulletproof - but not really a Kikker competitor - The Hammer is more closely related - if it's as good as my powerbeam it will be incredible.

I've got the Cycle Ops Magnus (wheel on). Not directly comparable to what you are looking for but I can say Cycle Ops distributors give fantastic customer service so can highly reccommend them. I am also very happy with the performance of the unit (+/- 1 years use so far).

If I had to buy again now I would definitely opt for a direct drive trainer.

Don't think you could possibly go wrong with either of the options you have listed. If I had to choose between the brands it would come down purely to price for me.

I’ve had a power beam pro for a number of years and it’s like a Toyota.... “Everything keeps going right... Toyota” or a Panasonic “zero defect”

Corny I know... but you get the point ... it’s simply ????

Although I’ve never needed back up service, a product is only as good as the back up support which I believe is excellent in SA

Thanks for all the input.

based on previous excellent service from Bicyclepower I ordered the Hammer.

Smart move - excellent choice.

I have not seen any comments on the new Tacx Neo 2018 (pictured).  It certainly is a great looking direct drive trainer, and seems fairly compact from a space point of view.

Kickr is great, I had a kickr 1.  A small note of caution, however relates to the SA Wahoo agent's customer service.  My Kickr1 started dropping connectivity within 2 or so months of buying it.  The response and service from the local agent was unbelievably bad.  Firstly, their technical people had ZERO idea had to deal with the device beyond the most basic google troubleshooting, and constantly pushed back saying that the fault was mine.  In the end, they did not resolve the problem,  washed their hands and just became unresponsive.  I was very fortunate to have bought the device from a bike shop with a very high degree of integrity and REAL customer service: the bike shop swapped out a new kickr (at their own cost) with no contest with a Kickr2.   The new Kickr2 has been great, no problems.

The lesson learnt:

Kickr is a great device, if not the best currently.

If you are going to buy a kickr, however, make sure you buy it from a trusted bike shop,  as the local agents for me were  rubbish when faced with a real technical problem, and you will just get frustration from these guys.  All they seemed interested in is selling devices, and pay lip service to real customer support (certainly in my case)

Hello PygaSchmyga,

As the agents for the Wahoo Fitness brand in South Africa we take comments like this very seriously. It is not our culture to have a customer hanging and waiting for an answer.

We have three dedicated customer support team members looking after KICKR support and after sales service and have only improved our quality of customer service. We are definitely not in the business to only move units, but we aim to create a world class experience on the indoor trainer.

We would also not jeopardise a relationship with an authorised retailer in this way either. The support you receive from them in a swop out would be backed by our CS and management team.

As managing director I will send you a PM with my contact details and would like to follow up on the situation to get better clarity on how we can improve further.

Christian
