Back pedal brakes

The other day I asked the postie if I could take his red solid steel with added lead bicycles for a spin.

Retro cool does not even start to come into it. However, it had that pedal backwards brake system thingy.

I have asked before and forgottten - but what do you call those things?

I suppose the key to using one would be to find a rim with the correct spoke to match the hub.

Do all wheels have the same spoke count ?

Of course fitting them onto a mtb wheel or a road wheel could also be an issue, depending on the hub width ?

#coming to grips with ss

A Coaster brake? I seem to remember my first bmx had one.

You can still buy them. But why?

'cause you can.

I have an old 26er frame and it would be great to convert it to a ss with that back break thingy. Just because. And I think it would be cool.

As for a fixie, I dont trust my legs to stop me when it matters most.

Fixed hub?

No a "fixed hub " is what you have on "track bikes " and " spnning bikes " The rear sprocket is screwed on with a lock ling to prevent it unscrewing when slowing down . I  have a  bike with the " terug trap briek " on it . Great fun on sand for doing broad slides at speed because it locks instantly .

SB, I did the half Argus few years back with my red post office bike with back pedal brake...

Uphills were fine, it's single speed so momentum is king and you just go right and gooi kole.

Downhill is downright scary. Those back pedal brakes are not discs, they take an age to stop at speed- just like a truck... I klapped as far left as possible on the downhills to stay out of trouble as far as possible...

A number of years ago a few of us did the Argus on a butcher delivery bikes, small front wheel with a metal basket above it, and back pedal brakes. We had car tyre "shoes" and had to use those on the front wheel as the brakes couldn't slow us down enough - a ridiculous amount of fun.

Chat to the guys at Rook Cycles. Great bunch and I'm sure they will be happy to share some thoughts and even hook you up if or when the time comes.

looked at the add in the classifieds and decided to try and find something with a back brake rather than on the bars or using takkies or old car rubber strapped to my feet

David, would these back brake hubs work on a conventional 26er wheel ?

We have a shop here in Somerset West that caters for older bikes and have one of these brake type things for R250.

But they could not tell me anything about the spoke count needed and if it would work on a mountain bike wheel

SB, you should be able to get the complete wheel with the brake everything at your local... ooohkay... what to call that....?

We have an Indian bloke in our town with a bike/fishing tackle shop who caters for the older/cheaper bikes, and he stocks parts etc. He rebuilt my Red Bike...

(He's got a '30's cast iron truing stand... been trying to buy it of him for ages....)

That kinda shop....

(Edit: ok, sorry, just now reading your post properly... don't know whether that'll fit on later 26'er.)
