finally building my frame  up..

 

 

but this flat/post mount issue for the front caliper, sjoe was hoping it would be easier by now.

 

have got a nice shimano road disc groupo, so need the adaptor on the fork

am looking at getting one of these

I was dabbling with these thoughts, but got all confused about compatibility between levers, hydraulic lines and connections and the callipers. I didn't follow through in the end, so can't offer any insight.

 

The most simple would be that adapter, but its not the most beautiful solution.

I went through the same exercise. I bought a flat mount groupo and 1 2nd hand mtb caliper. Worked a treat (all Shimano). I could not find an adapter anywhere.

 

Actually still have the whole groupset in my spares bin.

i think I'm going with the just get a post mount caliper.

 

the adaptor looks agricultural and i will then have a spare caliper

for the Front Brakes, you would need a Post Mount Caliper. These are readily ( or were ) from Cape Cycle Systems ( importers of SRAM in South Africa )

they might also do/have for APEX which is 1 level lower spec and price. 

 

the Adaptor you need is an IS to POST MOUNT Adaptor - these are very common. CWC have -https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/response-caliper-mount-f160r140

 

Unfortunately in the way of Gravel and Bigger Tyre Clearance - the options in Cromo or even Carbon Forks with FLATMOUNT are limited - even in 2021.

Problem is that the frame and fork have different mounts - flat and post. 

 

Road and gravel group sets are sold as a pair, mostly flat these days. You cannot mount a flat mount caliper to a post mount frame or fork (no adapters available that aren't custom made). So you have to buy a group set with post mount calipers and find an adapter to get the post mount caliper on the flat mount frame (hens teeth - possibly sell them with your frames). And like I mentioned, most gravel or road group sets are sold with flat mount calipers anyway, so finding a group set like that is a challenge to begin with.. 

 

So then you have to buy a separate post mount caliper -  a bit annoying when you have just bought a new groups set. It slowed my build down massively, I know the same with other guys.

 

The frame and fork needs to be the same standard, or at the very least include an adapter for the flat mount frame.

Baie dankie oom Farrnus, but you're confusing my silly little brain further - that adaptor has a 90' shift in it which doesn't make sense to me.

 

I'm asking for only front brake, using the supplied Farr chromo fork.

that's post mount correct?

Fork Spec : 411mm Axle to Crown Length, 100 x 15 with 1.5mm Pitch, Post Mount Brake
so your options there are:
Post mount (as you linked to) with no adaptor (unless you want different rotor sizes)
 
or
 
flat mount using an adaptor

Front brake is post mount. You will not find an adapter to get a flat mount brake to work with it unless you have it machined or if you import from the US at huge costs. 

 

You need a post mount caliper.

Those are your 2 options.

 

I know the guy selling them, as well as the engineering works that was used to manufacture them - you won't go wrong with the adaptor.

Soooooo. in true N+1 fashion it only took me about 18 months to finally build up this bike.

moving house inbetween is my excuse and i'm sticking to it.

 

it came together in a combination of my own parts bin/bikehub classifieds alerts and a final order from rapide it actually worked.

 

I've stripped and rebuilt bikes before, this is actually quite a bit more complex!

Had a few last week gremlins trying to get brakes to work, so only actually got the bar tape on 11pm before Nova Eroica, first ride was to registration, saddle pitch got adjusted and then a maiden voyage of 95km of Langeberg grippy gravel followed with bliss.

 

Verdict - some tweaks to be made, but this is going to be a LEKKER bike to ride
