I may sound pessimistic but the idea that a cyclist on the road would get even the smallest amount of respect by a car driver in SA that has never cycled before is as likely as the average SA driver not breaking any road laws in a day.

There are very few.

Sometimes I think we need to just be realists and realize that it's not going to get better, ever, only worse.

The first part of your post is not pessimistic, it's realistic. But the last sentence is very pessimistic.

The Dutch managed to turn their situation around. I know they are much wealthier than us, but still, it shows it's possible.

Maybe we just have to wait for the tipping point. We're clearly not there yet.

But at some point people wont want to sit in their cars for 1,2,3 hours for a 12 km commute. Only then will they start looking at alternatives. Or maybe not. Maybe they'll just get a series of podcasts to listen to - which will also help because it may take the irritation out of the driver.

YES, provided they follow the rules,,, just like everyone else.

HAHAHA 98% of motorist do not follow the rules....counted 7/10 drivers texting while driving or at traffic lights

It would go a long way if each one of us adhered to the rules while cycling and driving a vehicle.

Just as an example what would it do to the accident numbers if we all (not just cyclists) adhered to the speed limits???

I have 5km commute.

Mornings are fine, I go the office early.

If I get stuck in the office with a project and hit the afternoon traffic .... MAN !!!  Driving those 5km by car takes 3 times longer than by bicycle !

saw this on twitter earlier - this is in Kent, UK - madness.

Community order and 18-month ban for driver who killed oncoming cyclist while overtaking

Last line from that article hits the nail on the head:

“Roads are sometimes thought by drivers to be built for the exclusive convenience of motor vehicles but most roads are built for cars to share with a variety of other road-users, including cyclists."

From the comments section of this article. Supposedly a section of the road. Explain to me, how you hit a cyclist head-on, who presumably was in the 'emergency lane', whilst overtaking? One shouldn't ponder this too much....
